Generally speaking, when it comes to writers we just absolutely like here at Multiversity Comics, Joshua Williamson is chief amongst them. A nice guy with a great voice that’s getting stronger the more work he does, it’s been rather exciting to see his career in comics grow — and, as a proud owner of Robocop‘s Criterion Collection edition, it’s equally as exciting to see him take on the character of Rob O’Cop Alex Murphy.

The first issue gave us a fairly good impression, reminiscent of the original film with its grit and grime prevalent to the dystopic (but not too far from reality) rendition of a despondent Detroit. Williamson and artist Carlos Magno definitely brought the dream of the 80s alive in “Robocop,” and while the issue itself felt like a pretty heavy dose of nostalgia rather than playing towards ideas present in the new Robocop remake film (of which BOOM! also published comics for), it was nice to see a character who has had trouble surviving against a modern audience get a promising and fairly fresh start.

Which is a long way of saying that we’re excited to share with you today a look at the second issue, including a nice big splash page by Magno that really captures the turmoil of Detroit and the inner conflict that is placed upon Robocop as he has to continue to uphold a law he himself does not believe in. Drama! Metaphors! Excitement!

Spoiler alert, though: only the cover features 80s neon pink. I don’t know if that’s a deal breaker for some of you, but I figured it was worth stating off the bat.

ROBOCOP #2
Author: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Carlos Magno
Cover Artists: A: Goñi Montes B: Carlos Magno (Incentive)
Price: $3.99
Synopsis: OCP’s massive overhaul on gun control has left the city of Old Detroit in the midst of an uprising. With RoboCop and Officer Lewis in the middle of a law they cannot support but must uphold, there is no end solution in sight that doesn’t paint the streets in the blood of the innocent.

“Robocop” #2 goes on sale next week from BOOM! Studios.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
