Right now in theaters, there’s a little film called John Carter (formerly Of Mars) that is tearing it up in the fan community. While it’s grossed almost $200 million worldwide, the film opened with a $30.2 million gross for it’s opening weekend and has professional critics split almost evenly down the middle, doing about as well as Disney’s last big attempt at a live action film with Tron: Legacy, which saw similar results.

Yet, despite this somewhat mediocre showing, word of mouth for the film is strong. Most that have seen it wind up having a great time at the theater, coming out of it with hopes for a sequel. Our very own David Harper saw the film and described it as “awesome sauce”, while Chad Bowers couldn’t contain his excitement for the film. No matter what the critics are saying, people loving John Carter.

So with that in mind, this week sees the release of a brand new comic set in John Carter’s universe from Marvel, and they’ve certainly put together a budding palette of talent for anyone who has a renewed interest in the world Edgar Rice Burroughs created. Written by Sam Humphries (“Our Love is Real”, “Sacrifice”) and illustrated by the excessively talented Ramon Perez (“Tale of Sand“, one of the best graphic novels of the year), there has perhaps never been a better time to take a look at what’s going on on Barsoom.

The issue is in stores this week. Check behind the cut for a five-page preview as well as the full cover.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
