Over on Jeff Lemire’s blog (and seen before us on iFanboy), the Multiversity Favorite writer/artist has posted some pages from his upcoming graphic novel “The Underwater Welder.” Telling the tale of an underwater welder in Nova Scotia, the story tells of an ethereal encounter he has while out on his own working. Given how great Lemire’s work is on books like “Essex County” and “Sweet Tooth”, you can probably guess that this is a must buy already, and is a shoe-in for one of the best graphic novels of the year.

The solicitation for the book is as follows:

WARNING: CONTENTS UNDER PRESSURE.

As an underwater welder on an oilrig off the coast of Nova Scotia, Jack Joseph is used to the immense pressures of deep-sea work. Nothing, however, could prepare him for the pressures of impending fatherhood. As Jack dives deeper and deeper, he seems to pull further and further away from his young wife and their unborn son. Then one night, deep in the icy solitude of the ocean floor, something unexplainable happens. Jack has a mysterious and supernatural encounter that will change the course of his life forever.

Equal parts blue-collar character study and mind-bending mystery, The Underwater Welder is a graphic novel about fathers and sons, birth and death, memory and reality, and the treasures we all bury deep below the surface.

Set for release in August and apparently jam-packed with story and art by Lemire (the pages provided on his blog are in the 100-page range),

Take a look at the posted pages below. You can also pre-order the book now from Top Shelf or Amazon, if you so wish.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
