October 2 sees the release of “Strange Skies Over East Berlin” #1, the first of a four-part miniseries from writer Jeff Loveness (“World Leader,” “Judas”) and illustrated by Lisandro Estherren (“Redneck,” “The Last Contract”). We reported on the miniseries earlier this summer, and here is what Loveness said about it in its initial press release:

“Through comics, I’ve been able to write space operas, dark religious epics, and superhero stories, and now I can’t wait to write a sci-fi horror set within the bleak, creeping dread of the Cold War. The Iron Curtain surveillance state of East Germany is now far enough removed from us to seem shockingly familiar. It’s been humbling to research that world, only to see how many sad parallels of it we still endure today. There’s body-horror and sci-fi creeping through the paranoia of the story, but it’s also about what it means to be American in a world slipping away from you… a world that was perhaps never truly there to begin with.”

We are thrilled to share an exclusive first look at the issue, courtesy of BOOM! Studios.

Herring is a disillusioned American spy stationed on the eastern side of the Berlin Wall, struggling with his role in a Cold War that seems to have no end. But when he’s sent on a mission behind enemy lines to infiltrate East German intelligence, he soon learns the Soviets have a secret weapon that could change the tides of the conflict: an alien monster that they don’t understand, and can’t control. The Soviets are about to learn that they’re not in charge of the monster – it’s already in their minds and has twisted them to its will. Now Herring must find a way to understand the impossible – before it transforms him into a monster unlike any other. Writer Jeff Loveness (Judas) and Lisandro Estherren (Redneck) team up for a story in the spirit of Cold War classics, for fans of period piece science fiction as well as alien action such as Barrier.

Thanks to BOOM! for the preview, and make sure to pick up the book in October!
