Come this July, Thor and Loki, two characters defined by brotherly rivalries, will further their complex relationship as siblings by discover their long lost sister: Angela, who has been revealed to be the daughter of Odin after years of debating over who her real creator was.
Legally, Neil Gaiman won that debate which enabled him to sell the character to Marvel where she’s been bopping around space with the Guardians of the Galaxy since the conclusion of last year’s “Age of Ultron.” Now she’s going to join the family in “Thor & Loki: The Tenth Realm” a five issue miniseries temporarily replacing “God of Thunder” and “Agent of Asgard” that will also add on a tenth realm (that Angela presumably hails from) to the nine already established as being part of the world tree. And Marvel just sent us a tasty little preview (which you can see below).
Some aspects of this miniseries do seem a bit off. The arbitrary inclusion of a (relatively) new character into an established canon feels reminiscent of when The Sentry was revealed to be the one who taught the Hulk to be a hero, posed for Peter Parker’s first Pulitzer winning prize photograph, and took Rogue’s virginity.
There’s, uh… there’s a reason we don’t talk about him much anymore.
Still, Angela’s inclusion into the Marvel Universe seems a lot less forced and a lot less penetrative than Robert Reynolds. Despite being around for over a year, she’s only really made some appearances in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Her upcoming appearance as a daughter of Odin seems to make sense; she looks the part, and considering that this is coming from the two creative teams behind two killer Asgard titles (“Thor: God of Thunder” and “Loki: Agent of Asgard”), “The Tenth Realm” actually looks pretty good — especially when you see the inclusion of the self-deprecating villain that’s been coming after Loki in “Agent of Asgard”. So yeah, spoilers for that series.
Check out the preview images from Marvel below featuring Thor running to Asgard after forgetting he was supposed to be part of “Original Sin,” and check out “The Tenth Realm” when it comes out this July.
