On Friday, to celebrate the announcement of “Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong” at San Diego Comic-Con, we asked you to vote for your favorite DC intercompany crossover. The results are in, and topping the poll with 27.3 percent was “JLA/Avengers,” the 2003-04 series by Kurt Busiek and George Pérez that brought together the premier superhero teams of the DC and Marvel universes. It feels fitting that Pérez, who was a major presence at both companies, was responsible for the most beloved crossover between the two.
In second place with 12.1 percent was “Batman/Grendel,” which actually refers to two crossovers with Matt Wagner’s master assassin from 1993 and 1996. The first saw Hunter Rose and the Dark Knight cross paths in Gotham City, while the second involved time travel, and pitted Batman against Hunter’s 26th century counterpart Grendel Prime.
Tied for third place with 9.1 percent each were the Amalgam Comics line, and “Black Hammer/Justice League: Hammer of Justice!” The two could not be more different: the former series from 1996 (which we ran a retrospective on a few years ago) was (as its name implies) a campy amalgamation of DC and Marvel’s characters, while Jeff Lemire and Michael Walsh’s 2019 crossover was another thoughtful entry in Lemire and Dean Ormston’s deconstructive superhero universe. It speaks to just how many crossovers like these DC have done, and how they all speak to different readers.
Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to check back on Friday for our next Reader Poll!
