On Friday, we marked the tenth anniversary of The Legend of Korra by asking you to name your favorite comic book from the world of Korra and Avatar: The Last Airbender. “The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars,” written by series co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino with art by Irene Koh, won with 38.5 percent of the vote, which shouldn’t be a surprise: the book, which was the first Korra miniseries at Dark Horse, picked up directly from the TV show, and marked the first time Korra’s relationship with her girlfriend Asami could be portrayed without network censorship (it even features her coming out to her parents.)
In second place with 23.1 percent was “Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Search,” the second miniseries from writer Gene Luen Yang, and the artistic team Gurihiru. The book, released in 2013, finally resolved the loose end of the disappearance of Zuko and Azula’s mother, Ursa, whose banishment was depicted in flashback but never resolved on the show, making it essential reading for many fans (and ideal source material for the upcoming Netflix remake of the series.)
In third place with 15.4 percent was the third and most recent “Avatar” original graphic novel, “Suki, Alone.” Penned by Faith Erin Hicks and TV writer Tim Hedrick, with art by Peter Wartman, the book shines a spotlight on, well, Suki, the Kyoshi Warrior leader, Sokka’s love interest, and the least seen member of Team Avatar on the show, during her incarceration at the Boiling Rock in seasons two and three. It was a narrow victory, and a testament to the consistent quality of the Avatarverse on paper or TV.
