To celebrate the start of Hispanic Heritage Month on Friday, we asked you to name your favorite Latin American superhero. There were many options, but in first place with 22.2 percent of the vote was none other than Spider-Man (Miles Morales), undoubtedly one of the most important, if not the most important superhero created in the last 15 years. There’s something beautiful about how Miles is not only an African American Spider-Man, but also a Puerto Rican one, truly reminding us anyone can be Spider-Man.

In second place with 18.5 percent was Renee Montoya, whom we listed as during her tenure as the Question, but she was a formidable and groundbreaking character before that. Like Harley Quinn, Montoya was originally introduced as a supporting player on Batman: The Animated Series, but she evolved to become something more, specifically one of the first openly queer characters in the Bat Family universe, and the successor to Steve Ditko’s legendary masked detective.

In third place with 14.8 percent was another queer Latina hero, Marvel’s America Chavez. The character became a firm fan favorite during Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s “Young Avengers” run, and remains as much despite the various controversies around her solo series (including a rewrite of her origin, that’s especially odd after the MCU maintained her original backstory.) It’s arguably a testament to how cool and unique she is: a lesser character’s popularity would’ve been soured by all that.

Thanks again for voting, and be sure to check back on Friday for our next Reader Poll! Last but not least, happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
