For many of us, we first encountered comics through licensed properties. For a new comic fan, seeing something like Luke Skywalker or a familiar creature on the cover of a comic was a great entry point into a world that can sometimes be insular and intimidating.
In the early 90s, this was where Dark Horse was absolutely thriving. Every month, it seemed to a young consumer, there was a new miniseries from characters I had seen on TV or in films, and it looked easy to jump in to with too much trouble. I was a seasoned comics fan by this point, but when friends would come to the comic store with me, this is the area that would often catch their eye. For a second or third grader, what could be better than more stories from the properties they loved?
In many ways, Dark Horse still thrives on their licensed properties. Sure, they’ve housed some exceptional creator owned series as well as their own creations, but for many people, Dark Horse is still the king of licensed properties, still putting out great work in the Buffy-verse and in the world of Aliens.
