On Friday, we asked you to help us mark a week since the legendary George Pérez’s passing, by asking you to name your favorite comic by him. Winning the poll with 29.2 percent of the votes was “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” Pérez and writer Marv Wolfman’s epic 1985-86 maxiseries, which brought about the end of the previous iterations of the DC Universe in spectacular fashion, including the unforgettable deaths of Supergirl and Barry Allen.
In second place with 23.1 percent was Pérez and Wolfman’s previous collaboration, the 1980-1985 Teen Titans relaunch “The New Teen Titans” (also including issues of the overlapping “Tales of the Teen Titans” run), which gave the world beloved characters like Cyborg, Raven, Starfire, and Deathstroke, as well as the first appearance of Dick Grayson as Nightwing. When people think of Teen Titans, this is what they’re thinking about (and yes, we’re counting the animated series, which Pérez himself cameoed in, as a reflection of it.)
In third place with 13.8 percent was “JLA/Avengers,” the 2003-04 miniseries that marked the final crossover between the DC and Marvel universes to date. The series, written by Kurt Busiek, acted as a coda to the pair’s awesome 1998-2000 “Avengers” run, but also marked the culmination of a project Pérez had started with Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas in the early ’80s. The unlikely crossover was reprinted by the Hero Initiative earlier this year to honor George’s life and accomplishments, ensuring his rarest work would be a little easier to track down.
