Earlier this week, Z2 Comics announced a new graphic novel adaptation of Dio’s Holy Diver album. This is not the first time an album has been made into a comic; in fact, it has become somewhat commonplace for records, especially those made by progressive or metal bands, to get graphic adaptations. This is especially true of albums that have a clear theme or are a concept album. So, for today’s Reader Poll, we wanted to see which album our readers want to see adapted into a comic book.
A few ground rules: we excluded bands (to our knowledge) which have had comic adaptations already, so see ya Neil Young, Rush, My Chemical Romance, Coheed and Cambria, etc. We also only picked one record per band, so even though there are lots more Pink Floyd, Kinks, and Who albums that could work, we went with the ones that seemed most likely from those bands. We also tried to incorporate a wide swath of music and artists here, but it appears that, more often than not, it is white dudes in rock bands who make concept albums, and that was especially prevalent in the 1970s.
We also tried to include concepts that could lead to interesting comics. For instance, the Carly Simon album makes a lot of sense as an anthology of sorts, whereas the Jay-Z record would likely be an action-packed crime comic. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band could be a surrealistic circus, whereas Joe’s Garage could be an irreverent comedy.
Finally, we couldn’t include every concept album ever made, so if we forgot your favorite, our apologies.
So, vote in our Reader Poll, and check back on Monday for the results!
Also, we didn’t get a ton of votes on Monday’s special ‘Did DC Fandome live up to its hype?’ poll, but suffice to say, 70% of our readers enjoyed Fandome on some level.
