On Friday, we asked you what your favorite song to reference a comic book character was. We made a list that definitely wasn’t comprehensive, but was a cross-section of eras and genres. It was a song that was a hit, about a classic, though not very popular today, character that topped the list with 18.5%. “Flash,” the theme song to the Flash Gordon film of the early 80s, was the winner. Queen wrote a song that is instantly identifiable, has the bombast of superhero comics, and still gets played on the radio nearly 40 years later.
In second place was a surprising choice, “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill” by the Beatles, which has a very brief reference: “So Captain Marvel zapped him right between the eyes.” It’s from one of my favorite records of all time, so I was very pleased to see it make the list, but it was a surprisingly high vote count with 14.8% of the vote.
Tied for third place were two very different songs: “In the Garage” by Weezer, a song that references Kitty Pryde and Nightcrawler, and “Casper the Friendly Ghost,” which tells a much more linear story about Casper himself, by the recently deceased Daniel Johnston.
