On Friday, we asked our readers which of the Eisner Award winners for ‘Best Continuing Series’ that won in the 2010s would get your vote for the fictional ‘series of the decade’ award. And much like the Eisner voters themselves, our readers agreed that “Saga” was the book of the 2010s, garnering 54.4% of the vote. “Saga,” which won said Eisner four times, is currently on extended hiatus, and is halfway through its 108 issue run. It seems likely that, when it returns, there more be more Eisners in its future, as it remains one of the most singular and well produced comics of all time, not just the past decade.
In second place was a series that released almost the exact same number of issues as “Saga,” which is “Giant Days,” which recently wrapped up its run with 55 issues. The series is, tonally, quite different from “Saga,” but they are similar in that both series did things very much in their own way, and relied on the vision of its creators far more than any sort of traditional ‘plan’ that we see elsewhere in comics. These are actually two of the series that I often tell new comics readers to check out, as they are stand-alone books that can ignite a love of sequential art, even in first time comic readers. 24.1% of our voters cast their ballot for “Giant Days.”
“Daredevil” finished third with 10.1% of the vote. This series is very different from the first time, in that it is part of a shared universe with decades of stories behind it, informing this run. The fact that it was the only such book to win an Eisner in the decade is an indisputable comment on its quality.
Check back on Friday for our next Reader Poll, and congratulations to “Bitter Root,” the first Best Continuing Series winner of this decade!
