On Friday, we asked our readers to weigh in on their favorite Alan Grant comic, to honor the writer who passed away last week. There were a number of choices, but it appears, due to some reader feedback, that we should’ve included Grant’s “Anarky” miniseries, but we felt that the definitive Anarky story was the initial one found in “Detective Comics.”
Now, whether for that reason or another, Grant’s “Detective Comics” run was the most voted for in our poll, with 20% of our readers selecting it. Grant’s time on “Tec,” often co-writing with John Wagner and illustrated by Norm Breyfogle, was a very meaningful run, and is still considered one of the best Batman teams of the era, if not the best.
Tied for second place are two bastards – or bastiches, if you prefer – in Judge Dredd and Lobo, with each’s title getting 14.3%. Another Grant 2000 AD title, “Anderson, Psi Division” tied with “Batman: Shadow of the Bat” for third place, each receiving 11.4% of the vote.
If you’re a fan of either Dredd or Batman, Grant’s work needs to be on your ‘to read’ list, if not your shelf. Rest in Power, sir.
