On Friday, inspired by Annie Live, we asked what was the next comic strip turned musical should be. With a mix of modern strips and decades-old classics, we wanted to see what y’all would want to buy tickets to see on Broadway. The winner is not a surprise, and it would be a legitimately fascinating piece of source material to draw a musical from.
“Calvin and Hobbes” narrowly squeaked out the winning vote with 26.1% of the vote. Generally considered not just one of the greatest comic strips of all time, but one of the best works of sequential art of the 20th century, the strip has remained untouched for so long that it seems almost impossible that Bill Watterson would allow it to be adapted. That said, I’d love to see it!
Coming in second was “The Far Side,” another nearly unadaptable work, though it did spawn a few TV specials back in the 90s. The vignette nature of the strip could make fo a revue-type play, but it is hard to imagine any sort of narrative story. Maybe something about cows? 21.7% of our readers have more imagination than I do, it appears.
Rounding out the top three was “Bloom County,” the newest of the three ‘winning’ strips, got 13% of the vote.
Check back on Friday for our next Reader Poll!
