On Friday, we asked our readers to chose between the Big 2’s big two monsters: Marvel’s Dracula and DC’s Frankenstein. Although I expected there to be a winner, of course, the landslide nature of the results had me somewhat surprised.

Now, our readers didn’t exactly say that Dracula sucks (see what I did there?), but they did vote 70.3% to 29.7% that Frankenstein is the superior character. Now again, this is not a referendum on the legacy of either literary character, but rather the comic versions. And the fact of the matter is that DC’s Frankenstein is very much his own character at this point. There’s a deep mythology built up around the character, and he almost – almost – exists as a separate entity than the literary or film versions.

That’s not as true for Dracula. While there are, no doubt, good stories featuring him, Marvel’s Dracula simply doesn’t have the uniqueness or frequency of recent stories to truly stand alongside DC’s poetic swordsman.

Check back on Friday for our next Reader Poll!
