On Friday, we asked our readers what their favorite ‘old’ superhero story was, that is a tale that took place with an aged hero at the center of it. While we offered a wide variety of titles, two really stood out, and both came from DC Comics.
The winning entry was Mark Waid and Alex Ross’s “Kingdom Come,” a story that sees an older Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman deal with a changing world, a disaster, and the idea of heroism moving forward. It’s a classic story that has surprisingly aged well, despite it being one of too many ‘superheroes fighting each other over ethics’ stories over the past thirty years. “Kingdom Come” received exactly one third, 33.3%, of the vote.
Coming in second was Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns,” which set the standard for this type of story and, according to some, has still not seen anyone top it. 26.7% felt that this ‘old, broken Batman’ story was tops, and DC might agree, as they’ve now greenlit a number of sequels to it.
Rounding out the top three was a Marvel title that I did not expect: “Hulk: Imperfect” got 11.1% of the vote. While this nothing against the Peter David/George Pérez story, it isn’t usually talked about in the same that something, like “Old Man Logan” is.
Check back on Friday for our next poll!
