On Friday, we looked back on the career of Kevin O’Neill, the recently departed English artist. While O’Neill has done many important and excellent comics, it isn’t surprising to see our readers focus on the work of his that has both endured for 20 years and likely had the most mainstream recognition outside of the UK.
“The League of Extraordinary Gentleman” took the top spot, with 44% of our readers selecting it as their favorite O’Neill work. This collaboration with Alan Moore was, and to a certain degree, still is a comic that is often a stepping stone from superhero work into creator owned stuff for relatively new readers. The fact that its legacy can endure the film adaptation that was so bad that Sean Connery never worked again tells you how important the comic actually is.
“Nemesis the Warlock,” a 2000 AD strip, came in second with 24%. Another UK favorite, “Marshall Law” took 22% of the vote. I want to shout out the five real ones who voted for his Green Lantern story with Moore which led to DC publishing the story without Comics Code Authority approval. That story, ‘Tygers’ from “Tales of the Green Lantern Corps” #2, is an essential Green Lantern story, and worth your time to read.
