On Friday, we asked our readers to vote for their favorite autumnal comic. That doesn’t necessarily mean a comic set between September and November (at least for us in the Northern Hemisphere), but rather one that evokes those feelings that come with the fall. We weren’t quite sure how well we were expressing ourselves, but it seemingly worked out, because of the four titles I’m going to mention, only one of them is traditionally autumnal.
31.6% of our readers voted for “Mouse Guard.” The book, by David Petersen, had its first arc set in the autumn, but from then on didn’t really focus on the times of year as heavily, but retained some of the tonality and coloring from that first arc. So, perhaps that is why our readers associate it so strongly with fall.
In second place came “Sweet Tooth” with 21.1%. If I had to venture a guess, I would say that Jose Villarubia’s coloring is a big part of the autumnal tone. However, the woods, often with falling leaves, also makes for a fall-esque setting. Plus, lotsa flannel.
And finally, tied for third were “Bone” and “The Autumnlands” with 15.8% of the vote. While “Bone” is more like the first two titles, “The Autumnlands” is a no questions asked fall comic.
