On Friday, we asked which of the classic Universal Studios monsters was your favorite. It was a perfectly seasonal choice on Friday, but with Halloween just a day behind us, it seems like we’re already a season removed from spooky stuff. But alas, we have to report on what our readers thought, so let’s stay in the Halloween spirit for a few more minutes.
Coming in first is Boris Karloff’s classic portrayal of Frankenstein’s Monster in 3 films (Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and Son of Frankenstein), as well as the performances followed by Bela Lugosi (Frankenstein vs the Wolf Man), Lon Chaney Jr. (The Ghost of Frankensten), and Glenn Strange (House of Dracula, House of Frankenstein, and Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein). This is, undoubtedly, the most iconic image from any horror film of the 20th century, and so the victory isn’t that surprising. 33.3% of our voters selected the Monster.
In second place is Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, with 30.6% of the vote. While still the most iconic Dracula by a long shot, Lugosi actually only played the Count twice on film: Dracula and Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Rounding out the top three is the last to appear on screen, and the Universal monster wit the least precedent/backstory prior to the film: the Creature from the Black Lagoon. 27.8% of our readers chose the Gill Man as their favorite.
