On Friday, we asked you to name your favorite speedster in comic books, and arriving in first place with a whopping 54.9 percent of the vote was Wally West, the past and present holder of the title of the Flash. For an entire generation, Wally was the Flash following the death of his predecessor, Barry Allen, in 1986’s ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths,’ as well as because of Michael Rosenbaum’s winning portrayal on Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

In second place with 11.3 percent was Barry Allen himself. For an older and younger generation, Barry — Wally’s uncle, and Hal Jordan’s best bud — is the Flash, because they grew up with the Silver Age comics, the post-2009 era of books when he returned from the dead, or The Flash TV show starring Grant Gustin (now set to become the longest-running Arrowverse hero.)

In third place, rather surprisingly, with 8.5 percent, was Jay Garrick, the original Golden Age Flash. I expected Marvel’s Quicksilver (who ranked fourth with 5.6 percent of the vote) to reach this spot, but it’s clear a fair amount of you are Justice Society fans with a strong soft spot for the old-timer, and why not? He’s been a mentor to many a superhero, he fought the Nazis, and he has a really cool helmet.

Sonic the Hedgehog, whose new movie inspired this poll, received only one vote. Sorry Sonic!

Check back on Friday for our next Reader Poll!

Earlier this week, X-Men ’97, a continuation/reboot of the classic 1990s X-Men cartoon, debuted on Disney+. This is not the first time that an older property has been relaunched, but this feels like one of the most carefully considered reboots of the modern TV era. There’s a lot of nostalgia behind the original X-Men: The […]
