Guest Starring the Darkness!
Since the beginning of time, the Angelus has been diametrically opposed to the Darkness. But will Danielle Baptiste, the newest bearer of the Angelus, be able to choose her own path when confronted by sometimes ally Jackie Estacado, bearer of the Darkness?

The fine people over at Top Cow were kind enough to send us a review copy of Angelus and despite my never having read Angelus (or largely anything in the Top Cow universe) I gave it a shot.

Ever since the (I’m assuming) Broken Trinity event, things have changed for our hero Dani Baptiste. She moved from her life in New York to return home to New Orleans, with her new “friend” Finch. The definition of their relationship is pretty mysterious, much like Finch herself.

After an issue or two of set up, explaining the new status quo to new readers (something writer Ron Marz does pretty well, I might add.) We finally had a fight between the two opposing forces in nature, the Angelus and the Darkness. The interesting dichotomy here is that I learned (through research, obviously) is that before, the Angelus was an antagonist for the Darkness, but here it’s the opposite, and our hero and villain roles have in a sense been reversed. We see a more sympathetic Angelus and a Jackie Estacado that’s more of a dick than anything. I really enjoyed the emotional connections placed throughout the book, giving us a pretty clear (albeit relatively small) set of supporting characters to attach Dani to life as we know it in New Orleans.

But I wasn’t the biggest fan of the art. Stjepan Sejic’s art is nice to look at at first, but as you move through the book, it starts to feel flat. If he can make his art pop, it’d be something special.

Final Verdict: 6.8 – Browse

Gilbert Short

Gilbert Short. The Man. The Myth. The Legend. When he's not reading comic books so you don't have to, he's likely listening to mediocre music or watching excellent television. Passionate about Giants baseball and 49ers football. When he was a kid he wanted to be The Ultimate Warrior. He still kind of does. His favorite character is Superman and he will argue with you about it if you try to convince him otherwise. He also happens to be the head of Social Media Relations, which means you should totally give him a follow onTwitter.
