Today Marvel’s Avengers Academy #1 hit comic shops. Christos Gage (X-Men/Spider-Man, Wildcats) fills the role as writer while Mike McKone continues his work for Marvel by providing the art. Fresh into the Heroic Age, Avengers Academy picks up from Avengers: The Initiative series with the telling of powered teenagers with extraordinary powers being taught and mentored by veteran heroes.

The first issue introduces us to a new cast of teenage characters with problems dealing with their powers. For example: we meet Veil, a girl who can turn into various gases, although this power is slowly killing her. We also meet Hazmat, a girl who emits toxic radiation and must wear a containment suit for the protection of others. Also, the Internet fan favorite is tragic Mettle who is “like Colossus if he couldn’t turn back”. The introduction of new characters leaves a bitter taste in my mouth for many reasons. Not only are these new characters introduced when there are many Avengers: Initiative students left in limbo, but these in my opinion are rehashed characters from Academy X and New X-Men. Veil is similar to Dust, Hazmat is similar to Wither, Mettle is similar to Rockslide, and Finesse is similar to Prodigy. Although I enjoyed the book, I did note these similarities in characteristics and origins.

The hired staff which will be mentoring the previously mention characters are a definite plus side in the book. The staff is already being fleshed out and creating specific atmospheres. On a personal note, the addition of Quicksilver onto the staff has left me thrilled. I’ve been waiting for more redeeming stories involving him ever since Son of M. The staff is a group of characters I thought I’d never see together and that excites me! I feel there is a lot to anticipate regarding the interactions between students and teachers.

Finally, the art is absolutely top notch. I’ve followed Mike McKone’s art since Teen Titans in the early 2000’s and always been a fan of his work. His work on Amazing Spider-Man earlier this year was somewhat lackluster, in my opinion, but this issue is one of his best. In addition to the beautiful pencil work, the vivid and rich colors make each page pop.

Check it out?: Yes. Although fans of X-Men might get a similar feel in terms of characters, the issue was very good and a nice catch in the beginning of the series. The Heroic Age is here, so why not keep up to date with all things Avengers?
