This episode has everything: Felicity Smoak, Captain Cold, Free’s “All Right Now,” everything.
1. Captain Cold: finally, a Rogue worthy of the show
Sure, they made Snart a little colder (no pun intended), a little more chiseled (no pun intended), a little more some third clearly intentional cold pun. The point is, that like so many of the characters on this and Arrow, the producers take a lot of liberties with all but the basics of the characters they bring to the screen. But, as I’ve said time and time again, if it works, no one is complaining. And Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold totally works – towards the end, we even get a little hint at the compassion that helps define the Rogues. After a few episodes of less than stellar villains, Cold gets it right. Maybe it is time to put some of those lesser adversaries (puts on sunglasses) on ice.
2. Some DC Universe quick hits
– Blackhawk Security was transporting the diamond
– Felicity and Barry make a Superman reference (which was also referenced in Superman Returns, which starred Felicity’s new boss)
– The diamond, which acts as this episode’s MacGuffin, is from Kahndaq.
– The beginnings of Cisco becoming a hero (Vibe) in his own right started in earnest tonight
– At the end of the episode, we see Mick Rory, aka Heat Wave, get introduced
– People are still calling Barry “The Blur,” and that still makes me laugh each time, because lol Smallville
3. A daytime trivia contest?
It says a lot about how effectively the show has built up a universe that feels true to the characters/setting, but the most unrealistic part of this episode was that a non-bar would host a trivia contest, and that it would hold it during the day. That said, E=MC Hammer is a pretty realistically clever, but not so clever as to be unbelievable, team name for a trivia night.
4. Damn Joe, you’re as cold as Snart
Jesse L. Martin has been a really great addition to the show, and this episode he got to show off something other than his “about to cry” eyes, which he shows off just about every week. He got to show off how adept he is at also being a catty bitch if need be. He was straight up nasty to Eddie, gave Iris the cold shoulder, and even gave Barry some sass at his lack of improv skills. It is nice to see a character as well-rounded as West pop up on this show, willing to not only have an emotional core to his character, but also some less than perfect traits.
5.Call Me UPS, Becuase I am Shipping SO HARD
I know I have been saying over in my Arrow coverage that I have been wanting to see Oliver and Felicity just get together already, but I take that all back. Barry and Felicity are Jim and Pam perfect for each other. I can even see Barry looking to the camera whenever Cisco names a villain something dumb. Because they are kept apart by being on separate shows, and because we know that Barry and Iris are eventually going to wind up together, this is a love that will remain unrequited, but goodness gracious, they have nailed this romance.
