Five Thoughts on The Walking Dead’s “Say the Word” [Review]

Last night’s The Walking Dead comes on the toes of another top notch episode that just so happened to feature (in my opinion) two major deaths. How did they follow that up? You can find out below.

As a note: things from the comic AND from the preview for next week are discussed in this review.

1. Ha! Michonne was right!

A constant part of this episode was the idea of Woodbury and whether or not the truth behind it is good or bad. We, as TV viewers, know that The Governor has some…interestingly kooky things going on (like his finally revealed zombie daughter!), and we know they took out the military men a couple episodes back, but Michonne is still going off intuition. We get some great, great Michonne action (her taking out walkers is an artform) in this episode, and we also get Andrea starting to realize that maybe her now departed friend was right.

Things are very, very interesting in Woodbury, and props to everyone involved for strong performances.

2. Daryl: Man of Action

I love Daryl. I just have to say that. He just gets things done. While he may stand out less this season because it seems like everyone does that now, but as soon as Hershel suggested they needed formula for the baby, Daryl was on it. It’s great to see him take the lead again, and he did a fantastic job in this one.

3. Rick goes ragemonster

One of the best scenes in this entire episode was one that started with Rick rushing at the camera with axe in hand, mowing unseen zombies down with anger filled swipes of the weapon, before it swings around to see his prey as he approaches them. There were a range of fantastic (and near insane) scenes as Rick deals with the after effects of Lori’s death (and eventual form as dinner for one particularly food burdened zombie), but that had to be the standout in terms of quality.

4. Carol: Dead or Alive?

In this episode, it’s revealed more completely that apparently, APPARENTLY, Carol also died last episode. Let me just say this: before I saw the preview, I thought she was still alive. After I saw the preview, with Daryl saying inquisitively “is that Carol’s knife?” (or something of the sort), I was completely convinced: she’s alive.

5. Where next?

After a second season where basically nothing happened, this season features action and story packed episode after episode. In fact, besides the first episode, everything has been fantastic. I think a lot of it stems from the creative unrest tied to the second season, but it really feels like Glen Mazzara and his team have gotten a good hold of everything at this point. So what do I think is next? Michonne will be pursued by Woodburyians, Andrea starts to recognize more and more that things aren’t as they seem, and Rick will answer the phone and pull things together.

Oh yeah, and Lori will be on the other end of the phone call. Naturally.
