Welcome to the LOST retrospective, brought to you by the dynamic duo of Matt and Crit, who you know from the weekly articles reviewing and recapping each episode. LOST is arguably the greatest show of all time, and is definitely the one that will have the greatest impact from our generation of TV. With that in mind, we have decided to take a look back at each season of LOST, picking our favorite episodes and moments to share with you the reader. Each day of this week we will take a look at one season, each of us picking our five favorite episodes from the season. Will we pick the same episodes? Yes, most likely. But when it comes to LOST (and when it comes to Crit and Matt, really) there are bound to be purposeful coincidences.

So with the series now officially over, let’s take a look back at the show that has been so important since September of 2004. Follow us behind the cut for more, and let us know your thoughts about your favorite episodes/moments in the comments!

Episode 6: I Do
Matt: The episode right before a 13 week hiatus, we saw Kate’s life with Nathan Fillion (amazing!) as well as get the continuation of the story from the previous episode. Multiple lives are on the line, and it’s a pretty big moment for the season. We had to wait 3 months before finding out who would live and who would die! Epic.

Episode 7: Not In Portland
Matt: Picking up right where the previous episode leaves off, this episode is filled to the brim with tension. This is the first episode that attempts to “humanize the enemy,” so to speak. We get a look into Juliet’s life as she becomes a bigger character for the show, and things begin to cross paths in interesting ways. It also gives us some interesting looks at the Others, and the triumphant return of Ethan. On top of that, Room 23! While I would argue season 3 wasn’t as strong a season as others, this episode is a great example of LOSTS ability at creating tension.

Episode 8: Flashes Before Your Eyes
Crit: Desmond is unstuck in time. Ms. Hawking’s first appearance. “I’m sorry because no matter what I try to do you’re going to die, Charlie.”

Matt: Oh man… this episode. Focusing on Desmond is something I can always get behind, but this episode changes a lot of the way that we look at LOST, as Desmond travels through time. We get our first look at Eloise Hawking, and the Widmore plot thickens. On top of that, this is the big “You’re gonna die, Chahlie,” episode, which shocked and confused us, as well as set a great tone of foreboding over the show. We already knew that anyone could go up to the chopping block, but a character like Charlie? How is that going to play out?

Episode 13: The Man From Tallahassee
Crit: Two and a half years later, we finally find out what happened to Locke. “John, you fell eight stories out of a window and survived. I don’t want to hear about what you can’t do.” Meanwhile on the island, Locke blows up the submarine (“sorry Jack”) and the “magic box” contains Anthony Cooper.

Matt: The magic box and Locke’s incident – it doesn’t get much better than that. This episode, while at times feels a tad bit like filler for “The Brig,” is needed 100% for Locke’s story to progress. Plus, it’s the first clue as to his relationship with Sawyer, and we get to see where Jack has been – having a good time! What? So the Others are cool? What is going on! This episode was a great example at the craziness that goes on in LOST that, if you’ve been watching, makes sense, and was a big pay off for Locke fans like yours truly.

Episode 17: Catch-22
Matt: Another Desmond episode, furthering the story about Penny which we have all grown to love so much. Here’s the thing about this episode though – we have the Losties, the Tailies, and the Others. Now we have a mysterious woman falling from a helicopter. What? We had gotten so used to the idea that our universe in LOST, at least on the island, was so small, and now we have a new character falling from the sky. Who is it? Is it Penny? We all wished it was. So close to the end of the season and we begin asking a million different questions as to where she came from. On top of that, Desmond is given the difficult choice – be with “Penny,” or sacrifice one of his best friends?

Episode 19: The Brig
Matt: This episode is one of my favorites. Locke upstages Ben with a set of trickery right up Ben’s alley. We finally get the pay off for a long going Sawyer story, and it’s one of the moments where the endgame for Locke slowly becomes clearer. Locke really has a huge character arc from where he first appears and where his story towards the island began, and this episode is definitely a huge moment for him and fans of the show.

Episode 20: The Man Behind The Curtain
Crit: We see Ben’s birth (he lied about being born on the island!) and arrival on the island. We see him defect and eventually execute the Purge. Ben brings Locke to Jacob’s cabin. Locke hears “help me.” Later, Ben shoots Locke and leaves him to die in the mass grave.

Matt:: The first Ben centric episode, and definitely one of the better moments of season 3. I’m a huge fan of where the season ended, because it brought a lot of characters into new places, such as Ben. Of course, this is also the first episode with the Man In Black, and is one of those episodes where you rewatch and say, “Oh… oh wow.” If you weren’t a fan of Ben before, or if you didn’t fear him before now, you definitely were/did by the end of this episode. It’s interesting that a character who is so clearly irredeemable can resonate with the fans, and the performance in this episode (as well as others) proves why Michael Emerson is such a fantastic addition to the cast.

Episode 21: Greatest Hits
Crit: I didn’t care for Charlie at the beginning of the series, but my opinion of him changed over time and I remember watching this episode thinking this was the end for him, only to find out he’d live for one more episode. His greatest hits list was sweet and it was quite a shock when he found people down inside the Looking Glass.

Matt: Being a rock and roll star myself, Charlie was the first character that I identified with. While at the beginning, his advances on Claire seemed odd, Charlie was one of the characters who had such a great arc of redemption. To see that, finally after all this time, he could learn to be truly selfless only in the face of his own death was heartbreaking.

Episodes 22 and 23: Through the Looking Glass
Crit: Ah, the flashbacks that were actually flashforwards. I absolutely hated the twist when it aired. I was shocked and appalled; how could they get off the island? How did they get off? Where is the show going from here? After a few weeks, I was okay with it. After a few more weeks, I thought it was brilliant and still think it’s the greatest twist of all time. A true rattlesnake in the mailbox, as it was called at the time.

Matt: Not Penny’s Boat. I don’t think I have to say more than that.

…alright, I will. I will say that, when I first saw this episode, the first thing I did was rage along with Crit. I remember him and I being so furious, but now when we look back, this is one of the best moments of the show. The halfway point to the end, and a huge game changer because we move from flashbacks to flashforwards. It’s one of the moments where, once you sit and start thinking and discussing with your friends, you realize why LOST is a one of a kind show.
