In this week’s Smallville, we had a return to the roots of the series. Sort of. When the short first started, Kryptonite was this wacky catch-all that would do pretty much anything depending on how it was refined. From all the meteor freaks to the various different products that were made using the Kryptonian poison (Tattoo ink that lets you phase through walls for instance), Meteor Rock has always been very unpredictable in its effects.
Overview: This week this formula was re-used, with the magical meteor being used as a Suggestive Aid. The ironic part about it is that it didn’t make Clark highly susceptible to the power of suggestion; it was everyone else around him, from Lois (ESPECIALLY Lois) to Chloe to even Zod. It had potentially disastrous effects as it made people act like extreme versions of themselves or even act completely opposite of their own character.
What Worked: There is no other way to put it; Erica Durance is the PERFECT Lois Lane. She and Tom Welling are the best part about the show, and their chemistry is off the charts. There was also definite plot movement, as the brewing conflict between Clark and Zod is getting positively palpable. The effects of the Persuasionite were handled well (even if I didn’t particularly care for the cause of said effects.). And every character under the influence of Persuasionite played it to a T. Lois went from independent woman to a June Cleaver type over night, due to a suggestion of a “more traditional relationship” from Clark, and Chloe went super militant after Clark asked her to watch his back. Even Alessandro Juliani got his chance to shine when he went from super uptight Emile to a personality similar to The Dude. As a fan of Battlestar Galactica, this was a treat to watch.
And finally, the final scene was absolutely stunning to watch. It really sets a precedent for the limit of Clark’s powers, and it was just amazingly enjoyable to see how much he owned Zod. I could watch it over and over again. It’s easily my favorite moment of the season so far.
What didn’t work: While I love the call back to wacky kryptonite powers, the fact that kryptonite somehow cancels out “Persuasionite” didn’t make much sense to me. Also, how the Persuasionite had little to no ill effects on Clark was puzzling at best. I just didn’t get that at all.
Something to look forward to: The epic battle between Zod and Clark. I am really anticipating this like you wouldn’t believe.
Overall: It was a fun episode that would have been better if it didn’t have a few simple continuity errors.
Final Verdict: Tune In
