It’s a big week of Valiant releases, and this week and for the next few after this, I’m flying solo and taking a look at a couple big books. Check out my thoughts below in micro reviews, and don’t forget to share your thoughts on each in the comments!

Quantum & Woody #6
Written by James Asmus
Illustrated by Ming Doyle

This comic is so awesome.

I’m not just saying that because we have a pull quote on the front cover, I’m saying it because this book is freaking awesome. James Asmus is clearly having a blast on this title, making all of the characters singular and unique and fully awesome. The situations in this issue are to be expected, but they are effortlessly entertaining. Ming Doyle fits the title well, selling moments like Sixty-Nine, Woody and Vincent Van Goat painting their faces for…no apparent reason, and by the time the President of the United States attacks a militia in Montana at the end of the issue, we’re pretty all in.

This comic never forgets to bring the fun, and in this issue, we start making some fantastic connections with the rest of the Valiant universe as mention of the Sect Civil War pops up here. It’s all coming together, and I just dig it.

Final Verdict: 8.5 – a whole lot to love here

Shadowman #13
Written by Peter Milligan
Illustrated by Roberto de la Torre

Whut?

Seriously, what just happened in this issue? We’re thrown in the middle of a story that feels like it has been going on for a few issues, as some new Abettors have appeared, Jack is apparently killing people, and Alyssa is in the middle of everything. This is Peter Milligan’s first issue, and from the very start he has completely lost me, as I just have no clue what is going on. On top of that, de la Torre’s art, although very moody and often fitting of the book, often feels rushed and messy, contributing to the storytelling issues that are omnipresent in this comic.

This, in many ways, should be a fresh start. A jumping on point. Sadly, it feels more like a jumping off point to me, and I really hope Milligan and de la Torre tighten things up in the next issue.

Final Verdict: 3.0 – I reiterate…whut?
