Five Thoughts on Riverdale‘s “How to Get Away with Murder”

It’s been three seasons but Riverdale is back to riding high on that good, good murder pulp. It’s been a while since the show’s fired on all cylinders like this week. It only took a half season’s worth of build up and a bit of faffing about to really lay the groundwork. Much as I loathe to admit it, this story wouldn’t have worked as well in a shorter season. Dammit Riverdale!

Katy Keene begins tonight -- tomorrow as I’m writing this -- having forgone the usual backdoor pilot stage that other CW shows have gotten in the past, The Flash anybody? We’re treated to a small taste of the character rather than the show and, while I do not have the time for one more CW show to watch (8 might just be my limit. . .and 75% of their slate,) I’ve got high hopes.

As a former Quizbowl player, seeing this competition made my day. Sure, it’s nothing like that game, built more for television and modeled after those shows, but seeing a competition between schools come down not to a physical challenge but a mental one was great. . .if only there wasn’t the constant threat of cheating hanging over the competition.

I am flabbergasted by the quality of this week’s episode. Not because Riverdale is incapable of it, "In Memoriam" showed us that it could be done, but because I was not expecting an episode largely composed of characters sitting and talking to a psychiatrist to be so incisive. This was everything I hoped it would have been from the trailer so let’s sit back, relax, and talk about our feelings.
