Hi folks! Welcome the to our weekly recap of Archer on the Multiversity Summer TV Binge 2019. This week’s episode is named “Honeypot” and in it, Archer tried to seduce another man to recover something for her mother. Let’s dive right in.

1. It was merely incompetence

This episode started when Malory gets a call from Nikolai, they are discussing this episode’s conflict: they taped something, it got stolen and Malory is desperate to take it back, she meets whit Ramón Limón, who has the tape and discovers that he is gay, so she will send his best agent to seduce him in order to get back the tape.

Before talking about what happens next, I want to talk about one of the funniest storylines in the first seasons, the fact that Malory, from ISIS, and Nikolai from the KGB, two leaders of enemy spy agencies, are having a longtime relationship, for her it’s more like an open relationship, no strings attached, but it’s clear that he is in love with her. In this episode she suspects that he deliberately lost the tape to force Malory to live with him in Moscow, and he tells her that it was just incompetence. We will keep talking about their relationship in latter episodes.

2. Ramón Limón

Voiced by guest star Ron Perlman, Ramón Limón is a Cuban spy trying to get money for his retirement, and Archer has the task of making a “Honeypot” on him, to seduce him and get the stolen tape.

In Florida, Archer prepares by dyeing his hair and wearing what he believes is a highly seductive outfit, which relates to the earlier scene of him hiring prostitutes dressed as schoolgirls, he believes that homosexual men have the same taste of particularly perverted heterosexual men (like him).

He can’t stand Ramón’s reject and tries multiple times during the episode to seduce him, not for the disk, but for his damaged ego, until his cover is blown, I mean, it’s not like it wasn’t obvious, just like he says, ISIS are really incompetent people.

3. Lana and Cyril

Back in the office, after briefly meeting Ray Gillette, the gay element of ISIS, Cheryl and Pam convince Cyril and Lana of playing the highly unethical Kiss Marry Kill and end up having a discussion offscreen about Cyril choosing to marry another person.

It’s funny to see the couple of the show having an incredibly toxic relationship, I mean, it’s obvious, Cyril has severe confidence problems and Lana is still emotionally attached to Archer, rendering her a possessive woman of “a piece of flesh” instead of having a healthy relationship with another human being.

4. Latino men, you take the bad and the good

The other two characters introduced are Rudy and Charles, a Cuban couple full of gay stereotypes, but constantly calling off the stereotypes they see around, they are the ones that help Archer in his attempts to seduce Ramón.

They are very useful for the viewers to contrast Archer’s machismo and homophobia with the real world of gay people being just regular people being themselves, you don’t need to dye your hair or be so gay that you “sneeze glitter” to seduce someone.

And then, they betray Archer.

5. The real honeypot

Turns out that they are also Cuban spies, trying to kill Ramón –ironically– for being a gay agent for communist Havana.

After kidnapping Archer because he obviously knows his identity, Ramón and our main character begin to bond, they have he same problems, and overly possessive mother that keeps pressuring them, a relationship is blossoming only to be interrupted by the shootout.

Ramón breaks the disk and they defeat their shooters with a Claymore mine, this episode Archer developed a lot of personal growth, making one of the few friendships we will see him make on the series, and after having a moment of maturing and nearly apologizing for his homophobia, he laughs his ass off thinking about poor Woodhouse lost somewhere same old Sterling Archer.

Joke of the week: “Jesus, Spanish, our jobs aren’t enough? Now you got to take our words?”. Hey, it’s not our fault that Hulk and Gay have no translation.

And that’s it for this episode, overall, a funny story with personal growth from Archer, also, this episode set up a lot of the plots for the rest of the season. What did you think of this episode? Leave your comments below and join us next week for our take on episode 106, “Skorpio”.

And remember! Season 10, Archer: 1999 is airing right now on FXX, the sixth episode is airing today! Go watch it!
