Hi folks! Welcome to our weekly recap of Archer on the Multiversity Summer TV Binge 2019. The episode for this week is named “Job Offer” and featured hilarious misunderstandings and betrayals, plus, Barry! Let’s dive right in.

1. A(nother) failed mission

While pursuing some guy in Paris, Lana and Archer make a mess of the city, they damage the town, kill a bunch of policemen and didn’t even accomplished the mission. Right when they had the guy corralled, ODIN smashed their car and practically stole their mission.

This is the introduction of Barry, whom we will talk about later, and he offers Lana a job opportunity at ODIN, and, given the awfully bad streak ISIS have, I guess it’s a no brainer to change teams… at least that’s what Archer thought.

2. Agencies

Before Archer, I didn’t know that there existed for profit intelligence agencies, I mean, why would they exist? When you are younger you think this is only a thing between goverments, right? Then I discovered that intelligence agencies can be used for political and business interests, like the Steele dossier-fiasco and things like that.

Here, we have ISIS against ODIN as private organizations, as we have been discovering, ISIS are bad at their work,
more often than not their missions are compromised. That’s where ODIN comes in, with better service and more reliable agents, how could ISIS compete against that?

3. Awful parenting aka the Burn Notice

Back at the office, Malory learns that the mission was a failure thanks to Barry’s interfering, which makes her mad at Archer, which in retaliation tells her that he has a job offering, and she actually allows him to pursue better job opportunities, or is it reverse psychology?

Well, as Archer misinterprets Barry’s job offering, as if it was intended for him, he goes to ODIN and actually
gets the job, making Malory furious and extremely drunk, and, given that she’s always drinking, she would have drank industrial amounts of alcohol.

As vengeance, she sends a burn notice, which not only gets Archer fired, he is worthless to the spying industry, which means his life is in danger, and Barry is more than willing to “mercy”-kill him.

4. Archer v. Barry: Dawn of Spying

This is the first episode of the biggest villain in the show, Barry at first seems like a good guy, constantly affected by Archer’s asshole-ness, but as the series goes on, he becomes increasingly crazy and increasingly more machine than human, to the point where he is truly scary.

But I didn’t remember that this rivalry is caused by Archer, he didn’t save him on an earlier mission, which meant that he had to get surgery and metal prosthetics in his leg, Archer also had sex with Barry’s fiancée and a bunch of other things. After that, anyone could understand why he hates Archer that much, am I right?

5. Cheating

This is it, the episode where Cyril finally stops cheating on Lana, tells her the truth and they end up happily ever after… Just kidding.

We have discussed a lot about the relationships between the main characters, how Archer constantly cheated on Lana when they were together; how Cyril doesn’t trust Lana and how he is the cheater in the relationship, well, mostly.

And here, after he follows her all the way to Paris just because he is afraid of losing her, he ends up having sex with Framboise, and when Lana catches him, red handed, he cynically says his classic “Hello!” But we will have to wait to next week’s season finale to talk about the consequences of his actions.

Joke of the week:

Malory: “He’ll be back, crying for his mommy! Just like that Christmas break when I moved and forgot to give my new address to his stupid boarding school. […] Nine years old and bawling in that police station like a little girl! Ha! What’s that tell you?”

Cheryl: “Kind of a lot, actually.”

And that’s it for this episode, this featured the first appearance of Barry and set up the basis for his conflict with Archer for the rest of the show. What did you think of this episode? Leave your comments below and join us next week for our take on episode 110, the season finale, “Dial M for Mother”.

And remember! Season 10, Archer: 1999 is airing right now on FXX, the season finale is airing tonight! Go watch it, ‘cuz we’ll have to wait a whole lot of time for season 11.
