Five Thoughts on Krypton‘s “The Rankless Initiative”

While still entertaining, this was probably my least favorite episode of Krypton so far. Seg’s and Lyta’s respective roles were too predictable. Overall, the episode seemed to be a necessary thread in the story, but I found there to be a lack of action and a slower build to the plot than necessary. I am hoping that the show starts to build up more excitement and energy as we move forward towards its halfway point.

1. Shoddy Plan
Seg’s plan to find the Braniac-sentry before it took over a host was not the most intelligent one that we’ve seen him enact so far. Why on Earth (or perhaps Krypton is more fitting) would you go searching for something that is an actual parasite without a plan on how to contain it? Not only that, but you can’t even tell when it infects someone at first! This huge flaw is not discussed at all in the episode amongst the team. Even though Rhom, friend of Seg’s, was taken over by the sentry before they could do anything about it, I was personally still unhappy with this (which took up the better part of twenty minutes in the episode!).

2. Lyta is a Badass
I think it’s safe to say that we all gained a lot of respect for Lyta this episode when she put Kol-Dol, a bigoted and deceitful Sagitari, in her place after the latter shot and murdered an unarmed civilian in cold blood. During a time when police brutality is a huge issue, it was awesome to see some justice served in a straight-forward fashion. It also was a testament to Lyta staying true to her original intent of helping the Rankless find a semblance of justice amongst the atrocities that the Kryptonian elite have committed. I also am loving the development of Lyta and Seg’s relationship. We can see that they’re both learning how to operate in their new-found positions separately while still aligning their interests in the end.

3. Special Effects
I feel like I have to mention this every week, but the special effects on this show are really great. I was super impressed with “3 Days Earlier” flashback we see towards the beginning of the episode. It follows Braniac’s sentry all the way from its inception to its journey through the cosmos and to its final resting place on Krypton. Seeing its genesis with Braniac’s massive ship in the background was stunning, along with other scenes of planets and galaxies that we saw along the way. Truly a step up from what I’m used to seeing on intergalactic and superhero TV in general.

4. When Will Brainiac Make Contact with Krypton?
Now that we see Brainiac isn’t far off from attempting to take over Krypton, I’m interested to see when they’ll make him an integral part of each episode. It wouldn’t be surprising if they saved him for the end, but I’m really hoping that they give us at least three or four episodes of solid air time with him. This may be a tall order, given how much it must cost to have him in each scene. But if we’re being honest, he’s half the reason most of us want to watch this show to the end of the season. It would be really be awesome if the writers ended up doing the fans a solid and packing him in there as opposed to pulling a Rogue One.

5. Val-El
Val-El’s role is akin to a mixture of Alfred and Jarvis. He is the scientist/tech-genius of the group, and he fits the role really nicely. I assume that his role will stay relatively the same through the show, but it would be cool to see his character his develop in some way. Either way, I’m enjoying the character a lot.
