Five Thoughts On Supergirl’s “Falling”

Man, this show just keeps getting better and better, doesn’t it? Like a runaway freight train, Supergirl just keeps one up-ing every “best episode so far” with another even better episode. This one is exactly that with Kara having to deal with Red Kryptonite and National City having to deal with the fallout.

Emotions are running high in Supergirl‘s “Falling” so let’s dive right into our Five Thoughts on the episode! As always, a spoiler warning is in effect.

1. Seeing Red

Remember when Spider-Man 3 tried to use the symbiote storyline as a way of having Peter Parker deal with the frustrations of having his life roadblock his happiness at every turn by turning him into an arrogant asshole and it just lead to… well, this?

Supergirl‘s red kryptonite storyline is kind of like that in that it’s nothing like that and actually has Supergirl become… well, evil. While Kara slowly turns into Cat Grant II, Supergirl becomes arrogant and we get an episode about power without a moral compass. Not only that, but this is honestly Melissa Benoist’s best performance in the show to date. I’ve probably said that before, but she is just a powerhouse here. Not just the smarminess that she brings to evil Kara or the arrogance she brings to evil Supergirl, but the remorse she brings when all that comes crashing down and the real Kara has to face what she’s done.

It was honestly heartbreaking, but Benoist worked her ass off here and left it all up on screen. Amazing work.

2. Assistant Number One Becomes Assistant Number Gone

Man, this episode was harsh on Siobhan. You know, when she eventually resurfaces as Silver Banshee, I can hardly blame her for going full villain. She’s been humiliated back to front in this episode and essentially made a laughing stock in front of all of CatCo by Kara. Sure, Kara wasn’t entirely in control of her actions, but Siobhan didn’t know that. That’s going to be an interesting conflict when she reappears.

Also… were Siobhan and Winn just straight bumping uglies at work? Jesus. Pretty sure there’s something against that in the employee handbook.

3. The Jimmy/Kara Romance Of The Century

Man, this is… this is going to be a Thing, right? I’m going to have to deal with the fallout of this for like the next few episodes at least. Damn. Just when we were over Winn being all closed off and shitty because he couldn’t talk to Kara like a human being about feelings, now I have to deal with Kara a) trying to bang Jimmy in the club while all red k-ed up and b) trying to make amends by telling him she loves him right after his girlfriend broke up with him for like the third time this year.

Holy shit, these people are useless at romance.

4. Martians Among Us

This was a huge moment for this episode and I cannot wait to see how this plays out next week. Hank has been trying (and failing, badly) to keep his dual identity as J’onn J’onnz a secret from the DEO for a while now and despite openly talking about it in the DEO base, no one ever found out. But having Hank out himself as an alien in order to save Kara this episode, that was powerful. That’s the kind of bond that has been forged over 16 episodes now and his whole “I’d spend a thousand years in this cell to keep [Kara and Alex] safe” line was an incredibly strong moment for the character.

I’m interesting to see how this plays out with the DEO – Director Alex Danvers, anyone? – as well as whether J’onn will keep the Hank Henshaw identity now that his cover’s been blown.

Also: J’onn fighting Red Kryptonite Supergirl had more drama than all of Man Of Steel, I’m just saying.

5. Death & Return Of Supergirl

There comes a moment in every superhero story where they stumble, where they fall. Sometimes it’s a literal death, sometimes it’s a metaphorical one like this episode. But there always comes a time when they prove that they can’t be everywhere at once or that they’re only human or, like in Kara’s case, that they’re not as perfect as everyone thinks they are.

This was a great episode largely because of that fact we’ve watched National City fall in love with Supergirl in the same way that we’ve fallen in love with Supergirl. Every week, give or take, we’ve tuned in to see her save the city time and again and here… she failed them. This is a big moment in her journey and having to win back the trust of the city is something I hope plays a part in the lead up to this season’s finale.
