Five Thoughts On Iron Fist‘s “Lead Horse Back To Stable”

We finally come to it: the final Defender, Iron Fist. By now, you’ve been treated to the full live tweet of Iron Fist, led by our very own Alice W. Castle. Now sit down, get some tea, and get ready for these full breakdowns of each episode. In “Lead Horse Back To Stable,” Danny deals with a lot of fallout and tries to get back his chi. Let’s jump into this but be warned, there will be spoilers.

1. Davos Has a Legitimate Gripe

Last episode, I discussed Davos in more detail but with this episode we get to know him much more and to be honest, he has a really legitimate reason to be upset with Danny. Danny was chosen over Davos to protect K’un L’un and instead ran away. He’s been manipulated by The Hand, abandoned his post, and now can’t even use the Iron Fist properly. Davos isn’t wrong and I think that’s a really important element to bring into a story like this. Kung Fu stories are often full of honor and responsibility and Danny has forgotten all of that. Davos hasn’t taken a step yet into being a true villain and I’m curious if we’ll get there before the season is out.

2. An Origin Story

We’re really up to episode 11 and getting an origin story. At least, this is as close to that as we’ll get. The order of Iron Fist has been absolutely all over the place. I understand the need to explain who Davos is to Danny but the fact that we are just now getting the full picture of what Danny’s background is, is just absurd. Someone needed to come in and edit this show so it makes sense.

3. No One Is Okay

Danny is losing control of his not dealt with emotions, Bakuto is getting impatient, Joy is stuck in a tough place, and Colleen has turned her back on her family. This is a lot to wrap up with two episodes left as well as leaving us in a place that makes sense for The Defenders. I am not down on this entire show but I’m really nervous about how this will wrap up. Danny’s inability to control his emotions is kind of coming out of nowhere since even his saga with the Meachums didn’t make him this angry, so what will the pay off be?

4. Fighting In The Rain

Okay, so I’ve really tried to avoid comparisons to Into The Badlands throughout this entire viewing but I have to go there now. Iron Fist has this entire scene between Colleen and Danny in the rain where they fight a little and then make up. It lacks any punch and isn’t nearly as beautifully choreographed as a rain fight scene in Into The Badlands. That happened in the first episode of the show and this came in late to try and give us some kind of emotional connection to this pairing. It isn’t a bad effort but it just doesn’t entirely get there for me.

5. Where Is Ward?

I know where Ward is but I’m annoyed he’s just been ignored these last 2 episodes. The Meachums in general are way more soap opera-ish than Danny and for that reason I care about how their arc ends. Bring Ward back into the fold ASAP and make me care about him.
