Five Thoughts On Jessica Jones‘s “A.K.A. Shark In The Bathtub, Monster In The Bed”

Going into its second season, Jessica Jones was probably the series with the biggest question mark. Jessica Jones is not a character with a long history so it will be interesting to see what the show chooses to do and be. In the ninth episode, Jessica gains and loses something precious and Trish continues to go off the deep end. Let’s jump into this but be warned, there are spoilers throughout.

1. “This Is How I Get My Mother Back.”

Hey remember when Jessica Jones got shot last episode? Remember how it was pretty obviously Pryce? Well yeah, it was him and he’s in for a world of trouble because Alisa is after him from the second Jessica hit the floor. After a very one sided chase, Jessica gets behind him and tranquilizes him with one of Dr. Karl’s syringes designed for Alisa. They take him back to the apartment and throw him in the tub and argue over what to do next. Jessica wants to reason with him because he tried to kill them and that’ll land him in jail just like her. It’s a bargain that suits them both, however, Alisa wants to kill him and be done with this all. Pryce will spend most of this episode in that bathtub but he plays a big part in what happens at the end. Pryce is a character that honestly hasn’t meant a whole lot so far so it’s hard for me to care about what he does. He’s kind of just there when it becomes convenient and this episode is no different.

This episode focuses a lot on Jessica and Alisa and their relationship. A big part of this is confronting exactly what it’s like for Jessica now that her mother is suddenly alive and in her life. Part of this involves Jessica confronting the guilt she feels for causing the accident because she made her dad turn around while driving. Alisa puts an end to this immediately by once again telling her some hard truths about her dad. Her dad wasn’t a bad person but he was a real person with flaws and so, he wasn’t a good driver and that’s what Alisa wants her to know. She wants her to know that none of this was her fault. With Alisa in her apartment, Jessica has her mother back but this is not the mom she knew as a child and while she knows this, the idea of keeping her around is something she’s partially interested in despite the conflict. This comes up especially when Trish barges in to find out what’s going on with the IGH investigation. We’ll get to Trish but what we learn here is that Jessica wants a normal life and she lashes out a Trish a bit when she tells her that this needs to keep going and she can’t quit. At some point, Jessica reached this realization, that she wants a normal life, and I’m really interested to see where that goes.

2. Almost Rock Bottom

Trish is still getting high off Simpson’s inhaler and she’s completely addicted at this point. Jessica sees something is up in their conversation about giving up on the IGH investigation. She tries to push her to at least call her sponsor but Trish will hear none of it. She goes on the air for her show and ends up completely losing it on her guest who’s there to talk about gluten. Trish goes on a tirade about how more important things are going on and none of this matters because of all the bigger issues in the world. While her heart is in the right place, her approach is one of a high drug addict who’s addicted to drugs and also being a wannabe vigilante. After she quits her show, she’s approached by ZCN, a major tv network who offers her a try out but oh no, guess what? She’s out of drugs. Trish’s storyline so far has been really messy and it’s been dragged out this whole season with no real end in sight. She’s not going to die but what is the aim here? With tv, everything in the story should go somewhere and I’m still really unsure what the point to any of this with Trish is. Her character has been through the roughest of rough times and now she’s spiraling in a very different way that doesn’t entirely tie to anything else. It’s also forced the show to make her incredibly unlikable which is a shame since she was one of the best things about the first season.

3. Jeri’s Cure

Jeri is still trying to cure her ALS and to do this, she’s been able to get Shane out of jail and she blackmails him to get him to go with her. Before this, we get confirmation that Jeri and Inez have been sleeping together but Inez is sure that Jeri will drop her once she’s cured. Jeri, showing just a tiny bit of actual human emotion, says that she won’t. Once Shane is at Jeri’s apartment, he begins to do what he does. Even though Jeri knows that this isn’t guaranteed, she’s hopeful and breaks down as Shane begins to do what he does. We don’t know if what he does works but she’s still emotional as it’s all happening. Like Trish, I’m not entirely sure where all of this is leading. I have to think Dr. Karl is going to make a very big comeback and he’ll play into all this at some point but for now, this whole side story with Jeri feels very disconnected from everything else but not in a good way.

4. Saving Vido

This episode tries to cover every single base and so, we get some drama with Oscar, Sonia and Vido. Oscar comes down to visit Jessica because he saw her broken window on the street. Sonia picks the worst moment to show up and absolutely loses it and takes Vido with her. Sonia doesn’t want anything to do with anyone super powered and she makes a run for it with Vido. She takes a ton of luggage and their identification and gets on a bus towards Canada. She’s kidnapping her own son and so Oscar enlists the help of Jessica and Alisa. They are able to stop the bus they’re on with their pure strength and Vido goes straight to his dad. Sonia tells Jessica that he’s all she has and Jessica tells her that no matter what, Vido will always be her son but she can’t be his mother from jail. This whole thing serves as another bonding moment for Jessica and Alisa, which will sting more at the end of this episode. It also helps push Oscar and Jessica closer together which is what I think the end game for this season is.

5. “This Is How I Lose My Mother.”

At the end of this episode, Pryce finally wakes up and Jessica goes to talk to him and tries to reason with him. He tells her that he wasn’t trying to shoot Jessica but was actually aiming for Alisa since he knows she’s the one who killed his friend. Pryce and Jessica talk about their situation and he tells her that she knows exactly what has to happen here. Jessica knows that she can’t fix this. She knows her mother has killed people and is still very unstable and she makes the impossible choice of calling the police on her. The episode ends with Jessica losing her mother to what will probably be a life long prison sentence. This choice in the end is one of growth for Jessica even though it’s hard to put yourself in that place. Alisa is unstable and she’s killed people and while that’s not entirely her fault, it does make her dangerous and absolutely too much for Jessica to handle on her own. This whole season has basically been all about this right here and at nine episodes in, it is all starting to drag. I don’t know how this can sustain itself for four more episodes but we’ll see, won’t we.
