Five Thoughts On Jessica Jones‘s “A.K.A. Facetime”

Going into its second season, Jessica Jones was probably the series with the biggest question mark. Jessica Jones is not a character with a long history so it will be interesting to see what the show chooses to do and be. In the sixth episode, a huge bombshell gets dropped at the end and Trish continues to spiral even more. Let’s jump into this but be warned, there are spoilers throughout.

1. Jessica Might Actually Be Getting Better

After the whole thing at the aquarium, Jessica notices a jewelry store camera that probably caught everything. The store however, is closed so she comes back a day later with Trish (who is not okay, we’ll get to that) and asks to see the tape. The owner of the store is skeptical because he isn’t a citizen and he’s been robbed but he can’t get help because if the cops come, he’ll have to leave the country. Jessica sympathizes and actually treats him well in how she talks to him and ultimately gets to see the video. What they see is troubling to them because it reminds them of Kilgrave in a way. We see Dr. Karl and Janet McTeer’s still unnamed character arguing. He injects her with something and gets her to go to the car. It gets Jessica on high alert because she’s already dealt with someone like this. The real highlight here is how Jessica is actually nice to this store owner which is character progression. I like that. Character progression is good. It’s a shame the show pedals backwards at the end.

2. Jeri Gets An Ally?

Inez is still staying with Jeri and it isn’t going well at all. Jeri isn’t the nurturing type and Inez is making herself very welcome at home because Jeri wants information from her. Jeri calls Jessica after coming home and having an argument with Inez and she says some really harsh things about Inez. Inez then grabs one of Jeri’s bags and starts grabbing valuable things to make her big getaway. She stops when she discovers medication  and realizes what it’s for. Inez then goes to Jeri’s room and shows her what she was going to take. She then tells Jeri that she knows what that medication is for and begins to think about who she used to be. Inez tells Jeri that she was a nurse and she cared about people until what happened. Inez then tells Jeri that she didn’t tell her everything. After her attack, Inez was taken to a boy who literally healed her with his hands. She said if he hadn’t done that, she wouldn’t even be able to walk and this gets Jeri thinking about things. I still think that ultimately Inez will get killed somehow but I do like that this whole thing with Jeri is starting to actually move. I’m also glad that this whole thing didn’t get really weird with these two sleeping together because it sure did in other parts of this episode.

3. Trish Takes A Walk On The Wild Side

Trish is addicted to Simpson’s drugs and she’s starting to lose control of her life. Jessica is oblivious to this because Trish, a former addict, is good at hiding what’s actually going on and I find that part of Trish very interesting. She’s done a lot to rebuild her life and be this new version of herself but now this darker side, this meaner side, is taking over again and she’s willing to do whatever to keep up with this inhaler of Simpson’s. She goes out one night looking for a fight and her target ends up being completely harmless but she does get to kick a guy who can’t keep his hands to himself. Later, when Jessica finds out about Dr. Karl’s bankroller Justis, they go together to the all male golf club he belongs to. It goes as badly as it possibly good as Trish’s distraction goes badly because she physically cannot keep it together and vomits everywhere. Jessica doesn’t realize what’s happening here so she just thinks Trish is sick and depressed over Griffin. That’s not what’s happening and when Jessica leaves her, Trish basically tears apart her apartment looking for the inhaler. It isn’t there because she dropped it at Jessica’s place and Malcolm has found it. This whole thing with Trish has a lot going on now that I kind of like but I still feel like the episode count is hurting this story like it is everything else. This season is one long story over 13 episodes and this isn’t something that can sustain that without feeling like its dragging. I will say this though, Trish’s storyline is so far the only one that is making me feel anything because I do feel incredibly bad for her.

4. Everyone Is Having Sex

This season features two pretty big sex scenes that are going to have big ramifications going forward. The first one happens between Jessica and Oscar, the building super. She goes up there because she’s out of alcohol and is a bit lonely. They have sex in his apartment in spilled paint and in the morning, she bolts immediately after he starts drawing her. Initially I felt weird about this pairing but it is bringing something else out of Jessica that we saw a little of with Luke. She feels something for someone that isn’t Trish and that’s great. I want her to be happy and I like this progression. Whether it becomes something that lasts longer is still up in the air but I do hope that by the end of this season we see a Jessica Jones that’s still a bad ass and a bit grumpy but less alienating.

The other big thing here is between Malcolm and Trish and that’s completely destructive in every way. Malcolm has a little thing for Trish. It’s not head over heels in love but there’s something there. When Malcolm goes to Trish’s apartment, he gives her the inhaler and she is both high and trying to distract him and starts to kiss him and things go from there. Malcolm goes with it because he does like her and this whole thing is a mess. This relationship is not going to happen but I do hope that from this, we get Malcolm helping Trish get off this drug. Malcolm has been there and I don’t think he’s stupid enough to ignore all the signs because he just isn’t. He gets it and he’s observant so hopefully this leads to a really close friendship between the two because I don’t get romance off of them at all.

5. The Bombshell

At the end of this episode, Jessica finds Justus’s son and uses that leverage to get information from him. He gives her an address and as it turns out, the address is to the home of McTeer’s unnamed character. Jessica begins investigating the house and she picks up the IPad she uses for her piano sheet music. Jessica inadvertently gets the music to play and she hears a noice and ends up downstairs where she finds a secret room in the basement with a hospital bed set up. She looks around this room and visual things stand out to her and she picks up a bottle of perfume that resonates with her. Then she spots it, a photograph of her and her brother when they were little. Just then, McTeer’s character walks in and it starts to dawn on Jessica. Yes, readers, apparently this is her mother. Initially I thought, how could she not know this is her mother but then I remembered the scaring on her head and I guess Dr. Karl reconstructed her face. I’m going to be blunt, I absolutely hate this. It’s such a strange direction to go with Jessica Jones when you can literally do anything you want since her history is so small and you choose to have her long lost mom be alive. I wish this second season was finally about moving forward because I honestly think that after last season, we’ve given this character enough trauma. That first season was about trauma and this second season should have been about what comes next. Instead, we’re saddling this character with more of the same and dwelling in her past and completely ignoring everything else about the character that makes her interesting. Six episodes into the season and I don’t know if this can redeem itself in the end.
