5 Thoughts on Krypton‘s “Ghost in the Fire”

In this episode of Krypton, we begin with Lobo holding Seg and Adam Strange captive while following a few other storylines: Jayna begins to find her true self while her daughter, Lyta, moves in the opposite direction; Nyssa begins her career as a double-agent; and we get an ever-so-slight appearance of Doomsday doing what he does best. Let’s take a look at some of the details and speculate as to what we have to look forward to.

Spoilers ahead!

1. The Main Man Doesn’t Disappoint

Lobo, portrayed by Emmet J. Scanlan, is shaping up to be an entertaining version of the infamous assassin. He has an interesting (and somewhat psychotic) sense of humor while proving to be an absolute powerhouse, especially given the low-powered characters that have dominated the show. Not only this, but his healing factor is no joke (after all, how many people do you know that can take a blaster to the abdominal cavity and get up a few minutes later?). My only real complaint about him so far is that it can be difficult to understand Scanlan’s accent at times. That being said, I’m extremely excited to see him go up against another powerhouse (Doomsday, anyone?).

2. Jayna-Zod’s Journey

We find Jayna going through both a mental and physical journey throughout this episode. I was a huge fan of how they depicted her struggles, both inside and out. Her conversation with Dev shows how much she’s learned since Season 1, and why she feels responsible for her relationship with her family and with Krypton. I didn’t expect Jayna’s character to have a true reckoning of her mistakes. The twist towards the end of the episode makes it all the more powerful.

3. Doomsday

We actually got to see Doomsday in this episode!…for a total of five seconds. I understand that they’re building up anticipation for him, but c’mon people, can’t you finally give us something to sink our teeth into? While the brief spotting of this Kryptonian menace was fun, I really can’t wait for a day that they just give us a full-on fight with him. Hopefully by the end of the season? Fingers crossed.

4. Nyssa’s True Intentions

Nyssa’s true intentions are difficult to discern at this point in her arc. She seems desperate to save her baby from an upbringing with Zod (and I thought I had a tough childhood), but at the same time gives off an aura of wanting to help the resistance. The show is doing a great job of making the audience guess about her true allegiance. I’m excited to see how her story plays out.

5. Lyta’s Dive

Poor, poor Lyta; she’s having a rough time in this season so far. She continues to follow Zod down a path of control and tyranny, the “Sagittarius Way”, as she puts it. It’s incredibly sad to see, especially given the deep love that she had (and apparently still does have) for Seg. I’m hopeful that she’ll get her act together at some point, but in the meantime, it’s just plain sad to watch. This is another example of Krypton’s success with developing their characters this season. I only wish that this continues for the remainder of the season, but am happy to take what I can get so far.
