Hello Multiversity readers, and welcome back for the season two finale of Locke and Key. The Lockes are ready to battle with Gabe and his army of demons. They’ve been building towards something big, and fair to say they did not disappoint.
1. The Return
Ellie Wheadon (still looking like Dodge) manages to get out of the cave and goes back into town looking for her son Rufus. However, once she realizes that she doesn’t look like herself, she decides to go to the Keyhouse and help the Lockes. It’s a funny interaction between her and Bode Locke when he initially comes out with a sword to fight her but then gives her the key (Demons can’t take keys from the Lockes) test, and she passes quickly. It’s an emotional closure moment for him because he now knows that if they can get the Face and Anywhere Key, he’ll be able to reunite his best friend with his missing mom. It’s a definite feel-good moment for the audience and Bode since he was left behind while Kinsey, Tyler, and Duncan go to Gabe’s house.
2. Battle At Cliffside
This was the big battle that I would argue had been built up through both show seasons. The Lockes and Scot go to Gabe’s house with the goal of not only taking the Demon Key away but taking down Dodge once and for all. It starts off a little Ocean’s Eleven by having Kinsey distract Gabe with a fake suicide attempt (She has a new key that gives her wings) while the guys sneak into the house and go downstairs. However, that was never going to last, so then it turned into a Breaking Dawn battle with a lot of demon-possessed teenagers going up against the Lockes and Scot. It’s not bloody, but it is a more ruthless battle for the show. Since Tyler is heartbroken about Jackie’s death, he’s okay with using his Alpha Key to kill whatever demons get in his way. Scot utilizes the Hercules Key to even it up with the strength, and with a twist for the battle, Duncan can get the demons to listen to him since he’s the one who made the Demon Key. It’s a badass battle but ends a little abruptly due to the house beginning to fall off the cliff, and it looks like Kinsey and Dodge are going down with it, but Tyler’s key saves the day, and the big bad of the show is now gone.
3. On The Road
After the battle and all of the dust is settled, Tyler uses his winter break from school to go on a solo road trip and get more perspective on what he wants to do post-high school. He’s also still reeling from the loss of his girlfriend, and we’re shown him deleting the final video he has of the two of them in an attempt to move forward. I wouldn’t say it was a shock for this move. After all, it’s also him giving up his ability to remember magic because it will be around the time he turns 18 and says good-bye to Bode, fully aware he may not be the same when he comes back. With any show with teenage protagonists, there has to be a time when they have to start thinking of the future and what they will do. Locke and Key being more in the mythical genre of shows, there has to be a point where they deal with the outside world from the town of Matheson and Keyhouse.
4. Bodes Gift
Bode got sidelined for the big battle this season, and as much as I hate to say it, it was probably for the better. He definitely would have been more of a liability than helpful with only so many keys already claimed and a small army of demons. That doesn’t mean that he didn’t get any use for the finale. Not only does he help Ellie reunite with Rufus, but he gets to help his mom, Nina Locke, too. In the second half of the season, we’ve seen her emotionally wrecked about being disconnected from her kids and feeling completely left out. Hence, Bode decides to take her on a trip with the Head Key to relive some of her more happy memories with Rendell and other key moments. It’s a sweet moment, but anyone who has been paying attention knows it also feels cruel because she’d forget a few minutes after it’s all over, so it was almost for nothing. Bode decides to use the Memory Key and not only restore her memories of magic but let her make new ones by remembering. I still feel like this should have happened a few episodes prior, she’s been asking, and it could have helped protect her too, but it’s good to see it finally happening.
5. New Player Enters The Mix
Now that Dodge has been taken out of the picture, who will be the new big bad? It seems that Eden was glossed over after he attempted with Mr. Bennett in the sea caves, but she had someone else in mind to help her out. Mr. Frederick Gideon, the ancestor from the flashbacks Mr. Bennett was reading, first stumbled upon the Black Door and was hit with the Whispering Iron. With another twist to leave it open for another season, Eden releases Gideon in hopes that she would be the leader and she would have a solid lackey to listen to her commands. However, he will not listen to her easily, and he kills her by throwing her down the well. During the flashbacks, it was shown how ruthless Gideon was to not only the men who followed him but those that opposed him, so him coming into season three after being “dead” for a couple of hundred years should make him more than ready for the Lockes.
