Five Thoughts On Locke and Key‘s “Deep Cover”

Hello Multiversity readers, and welcome back to coverage of the latest episode of Netflix’s Locke and Key. Things around Key house are getting testy as Tyler wrestles with the truth hidden from him and Kinsey’s inner turmoil about the lies. Bode, on the other hand, has problems in trying to get his body back from Dodge. So let’s see what happens in this episode, “Deep Cover.”

1. First Day Out
This episode starts with the quick reminder that Dodge is now in the driver’s seat for Bode’s body after hitching a ride back with him to the current time. Dodge barely pulls any of her punches when it comes to the Lockes as she snags all of the pancakes Nina makes for everyone and uses “growing young man” as an excuse. She still has to figure out if she has any of her demon powers or strength and if she can take the keys from the other Locke kids. Although she plays along and gets dragged to school by Nina, it doesn’t seem like she is in a huge rush to grab the keys. Perhaps it has to do with Bode’s admission of defeating her that gives her a little pep in her step, but she’s not afraid to get into people’s faces. A random kid bumps into her at school, and Dodge slams him into a door and threatens to kill him. When he returns, Bode may not have any more bullies, but he will have a new reputation.

2. Friend From Montana
Tyler is on the fence about whether he should stay in Matheson with his family or leave for Montana to escape everything. Tyler found out that Kinsey lied about filing the police report and is feeling the separation between the two of them grow further. Luckily his “friend” Carly from Montana comes by to check on him after he ghosted her. Not purposely, but more due to him getting lost in his head. Although she leaves at the end of this episode since Tyler decides to stay, she is the voice he needs to hear, not only to choose to stay for now but to allow Kinsey to unlock his memories of magic again. The flashbacks of his time with Jackie remind the audience that he connects the use of magic with her death, so his time away was to heal, but the truth is he was trying to run away.

3. Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend
Dodge is forced to tag along with his mom on her date with Josh when she starts to hear some strange whispers. It feels like a clue to find another key to the audience, but it wouldn’t be likely since she’s a demon and not an actual Locke. Yet as he goes through the restaurant and nearby pier, it’s realized that Frederick Gideon is somehow contacting Dodge to give a signal that there is someone of similar power nearby. Surprisingly they don’t argue about getting the keys for themselves; instead, they quickly join forces. Dodge uses the fact that she has them believing she’s Bode and can search the house freely for the keys without drawing suspicions, and Gideon gives her the guidebook of the keys. I would have expected a little more turmoil or back-stabbing comments, especially considering Dodge seemed shocked after discovering Gideon’s ultimate plan to make a new portal for the other world. It’s just another of those things to keep an eye on, whether they’ll try to come up with a new plan.

4. Playtime Gone Wrong
Dodge is still running around the house trying to find the chest where all the keys are and even gets into an intense argument with Kinsey when Rufus gets dropped off for a playdate with Bode. The funny thing about Dodge in this episode is that she has made no real effort to blend in; for the most part, she makes rude and often hurtful remarks to anyone she interacts with and then makes a fumbled attempt with a half-thought-out apology. Rufus isn’t dumb, and once Dodge asks a question about a hiding spot that only his Mom and Dodge knew about, he knows it wasn’t Bode he was talking to. Rufus puts up a fight, so that’s a nice change of pace for the story, but little demon strength or not, Dodge comes out on top and threatens to kill Nina and Rufus’ Mom if he snitches. Since his mom just got back from the portal, he’s not likely to snitch about Dodge, but keeping it a secret for much longer will be tough.

5. Looking For An Answer
After a messy day of Bode getting into arguments with Kinsey, Josh, and now Rufus, Nina becomes more suspicious of something going on with him, so she starts to snoop through his room. The camera play inside the room almost made it seem like she would be dragged back into the mirror world, but it kept the story in mind. Nina finds Dodge’s lifeless body hiding underneath Bode’s bed and immediately puts two-and-two together. As that’s happening, Dodge walks into the room to see what is happening, and that’s how the episode ends. The whole time it felt like Dodge was playing on borrowed time when in reality, if she put in half the effort she did when she played Gabe, she might not have had to sneak around as much. It’s pretty sloppy overall for someone who tries to be three steps ahead.
