Welcome back to Key House for the midpoint for season two of Locke and Key. In This episode, all the kids get clues that lead to the same conclusion. Gabe continues to try and find a way to make a key with his hidden purpose while also trying to maintain his relationship with Kinsey. So let’s just see what all goes down in “Past Is Prologue.”

1. Lonely Bode

This episode, Bode gets to visit with an old friend, Rufus Wheadon. He is the son of Ellie Wheadon and one of Bode’s only friends. Rufus got sent to live with family in Nebraska after Ellie went missing and hasn’t been mentioned at all this season, but it is nice to see and give Bode some much-needed time away from the stress of trying to take care of Uncle Duncan. Bode being the youngest and keeping tabs on an adult realizing he had a chunk of his life taken from him may not have been the smartest idea by the Locke sibling.

Anyways, for the show’s sake, Bode catches Rufus up on the new keys they’ve found but also an insight into Rufus dealing with the fact that his mom went missing. Bode is going through an artbook of Rufus and sees a drawing of two Dodge’s taking place in Rufus’ old house. He says it was a foggy memory from the night she went missing, and Bode realizes that Dodge may not actually be gone and still hiding somewhere in town.

2. Memory Key

Tyler’s primary mission this whole season has been to try and find a way to save Jackie’s memory and for himself because, in a few months, he may begin to forget the magic, too, ultimately. Erin went inside her head to get her last memory of Rendell and where he may have hidden the Memory Key, and it’s somewhere in the academy where they all go to school. Luckily Tyler’s friend Logan Calloway happens to have a master key (non-magic) of the school, and they get to search for it. Gabe tags along because he’s trying to win some points back with Kinsley but also to try and snag the key away from Tyler.

The key is ultimately found inside the concrete underneath a bench the Locke family had donated to the school. Tyler gets the key despite Gabe trying to sabotage them every step throughout the school, but Gabe does end up getting some information he may find helpful. It seems that Uncle Duncan was the only one able to make a key and give it purpose. It’s still not shared with the audience why that is, but Gabe is sure to keep pushing until he finds out.

3. Angry Duncan

Uncle Duncan continues to go through the wringer because of his niece and nephews. It seems like giving Duncan back his memories wasn’t the worst idea, but the fact that he’s wrestling with what is and isn’t due to being an adult creates an angry and tense man. He spends the majority of the episode working on an old car in the garage. Earlier in the season, he’d suggested Tyler help him out, but at this point, he doesn’t want anyone around him. I don’t think anyone who’s been paying attention to Duncan this season can blame him for being pissed. The kids, I think, initially had the right intention to restore their family members’ memories. Still, then it turned into a chase to find the Memory Key. Which felt a little self-serving for their own goals, but they ended up using it to help him fully unlock his memories and not worry about it being wiped clean.

4. The Demon

Now that we’ve reached the halfway point of the season, we may not have an idea of what the ending may be, and we do get a few exposed big secrets. Kinsley goes to a party to console Scot for not getting into his dream film school. While there, she runs into a drunk Eden who begins to threaten Kinsley that she’ll kill her only to end up passed out, giving Kinsley a chance to use the Head Key to see what’s been going on with her and Gabe. After which, it turns into a trippy Black Mirror inspired scene that has terrible memories inside of perfume bottles and possessed mannequins. It’s through this that Kinsley realizes that not only is Eden possessed by a demon but that Gabe has been Dodge all along.

It’s finally the point in the show where the protagonist finally gets in on the joke. They’ve been the punchline all along. Bode is still in Nebraska by the end of the episode, but his clue about two Dodge’s may lead them back to find Ellie.

5. The Ledger

At the end of another date between Nina Locke and Mr. Bennett, she gives him an old ledger she found in her house. It turns out to be a ledger from the 1700s, and Key House used to be an old intelligence base, and that ledger marked all the activities throughout the house. Now, this is all good for him cause he’s a huge history buff, but the part that hooks the audience is that when he goes to look for his other journal papers to compare, he realizes the Whispering Iron is missing. This seems to bother him, and it’s unknown right now why that exact reason is. He still seems shady on his true intentions and if he’s only into her because of Key House.
