Five Thoughts On Locke and Key‘s “Wedding Crashers”

Hello Multiversity readers, and welcome back for episode two of Locke and Key on Netflix. This season is still being established, but this episode answers a couple of questions from the first episode and helps set the board for what is to come. So let’s jump right into “Wedding Crashers.”

1. Wedding Day
Today is the big day for Uncle Duncan and his boyfriend to tie the knot finally. This is essentially a background event for the audience because although Duncan’s boyfriend/fiance is mentioned through the first two seasons, he’s only seen briefly in one episode. The fact that we don’t know the fiance other than his name creates this missing element that makes it difficult for the audience to care about this event. For us watching, it becomes a question of whether something magic-related will affect the ceremony or reception.

2. Tyler’s Back
All the Locke kids are back under one roof as Tyler shows up for their Uncle Duncan’s wedding. It’s not a complete surprise since he’s the main character, but I didn’t think he’d show up before the ceremony; more of a last-minute kind of thing. Nonetheless, his return brought back the familiar dynamic we’ve grown accustomed to. The only twist is that he has no more memories of magic and the keys. All he knows is that his girlfriend passed away, and he needs time away from the house to process and move forward in his way. There’s even a point when Bode flips him while wearing the Hercules Belt, and Tyler chuckles and makes a joke about his fashion sense with it on. It’s tough to watch as Bode and Kinsey mentally deal with their brother and his hand tied behind his back.

3. Timeshift Key
Returning to the first season’s rhythm, Bode is finding new keys left and right. As he’s getting ready for the wedding, he hears whispers in the grandfather clock and sees the Timeshift Key. It’s a key that creates a time machine with roman numerals as the dials to indicate the date and how long they’ll be gone. Bode meets his ancestor Benjamin Locke, the first key maker, the first time, and then his Uncle Duncan when he was a teenager the second time. Usually, the new key is the catalyst to the episode, but this time it gets shut down real quick when current Uncle Duncan takes it away, so it doesn’t ruin his big day. The hook to its most certain return is that Bode got a chance to see his dad again and missed out due to the timer. It’s almost forgotten that the entire series started with the murder of their father.

4. Drunken Memories
During the reception, Kinsey finds Tyler after he’s had a few, and he mentions foggy memories of some of the adventures they had with the keys. It turns out that when a person who has dealt with magic and the keys forgets due to age, the memories would be temporarily restored. Kinsey pushes it to the limits when she has Tyler take another shot and then tries to get the okay to have his full memories repaired. However, after the good memories finish, he’s reminded of his girlfriend’s death when he tried to exorcize a demon out of her. The kid is in a challenging situation because although he knows the benefits of magic, it also reminds him of his most significant loss.

5. General’s Lackeys
This was also the episode where Frederick Gideon finally lands on the kids’ radar as the antagonist for the season. During the reception, Gideon and two recently created echo soldiers go searching throughout the house for more keys. The kids manage to shoo them out of the house but not empty-handed. They grab the Flower Key and Bode’s notebook filled with pictures of the keys they’ve found and what they do. It’s essentially the blueprints on which keys would be the most beneficial for him, starting with the key that opens the storage spot for the rest of them. The kids don’t know who he is yet, but he can do some severe damage with the Anywhere Key and Echo Key as his first couple of weapons.
