Five Thoughts on Lucifer‘s “All Hands on Decker”

Oh boy. Welp let’s dive in.

1. When you know you know

All right, well, following up on that speedy proposal from last episode, Chloe and Pierce are engaged and the party is ready to begin. Chloe is clearly overwhelmed watching people do wedding things, but why would she not be when the wedding is literally in three weeks?? Who gets engaged then gets married three weeks later and actually tries to plan anything besides just eloping. The wedding murder board is a good touch, and seems very Chloe as she’d totally need a white board to keep track of all the crap her and Pierce would have to do.

Anyway, this whole week’s episode starts because Pierce basically forces Chloe to take some time off, which seems like a weird thing for a boss to do even though they’re engaged now. Ella wants to throw a kick ass bachelorette party. and Lucifer and Dan proceed to pick up the slack. It seems like a really shallow episode following up on the emotional beats of last week, but, at least the ending of the episode somewhat sticks. I went from being really pissed off watching the first half of the show, finding it odd the wedding was soon and seeing a Lucifer who was more of an idiot than usual, but by the end I gave it a “eh.” So that’s good right?

2. “I’m here for your money and your women.”

All right, so we got two big plots this week and some minor little things that we’ll cover at the end. First up with Chloe out, Lucifer gets paired with Dan to solve the murder of a dog owner murdered at a fancy dog show, and the beginning of it is quite irksome. Lucifer is continually trying to understand why Chloe would want to marry Pierce, and has the (not so) brilliant idea that he needs to be like her in order to fully get it. So he spends most of the episode poorly mimicking some of Chloe’s tendencies. What this means though, is that he needs to force someone else to be like him for reasons? So Dan spends some time trying to act like Lucifer, for, you know, reasons. It’s an odd dynamic, but by the end of the episode ends up teaching them both a little something that hopefully sticks. The biggest things that bothered me was Lucifer getting to call a SWAT team to a bar and him getting to run in with riot gear and an assault rifle, him thinking having a dog is anything like having a daughter, and then him also having a gun coming to save Dan at the end when Dan does something stupid and impulsive like he normally would and actually could die because he’s not immortal. I’m all about Lucifer realizing how screwed up and unhealthy his relationship with Chloe is. Dan’s point that he never calls her Chloe and always refers to her as “the Detective” is a moment of great self-awareness for the show. This episode finally gave Dan a lot to do for the first time since he pretended to be a surfer, but man Lucifer acts dumb a lot. Maybe that’ll change next week.

3. Linda isn’t he in like college?

All right, Round 2 on big plot points: Ella and the bachelorette party. So Ella wants to throw a party cause she’s never gotten to do one before because she just has brothers and no sisters, and Chloe agrees, but then Maze wholesomely, and very on the nose, gets put in charge and well it gets more prudish. It’s funny watching Maze not be the liquored up crazy one, but she’s trying to get Chloe to fall back in love with Pierce cause his mark is back? But it’s really not? So then what was the point?

Anyway, all the women end up hating what Maze is doing so they call a party bus and get trashed driving around town and Charlotte gets a water polo team she’s repping to come strip for them. This is all fine? Can 30-40 year old women have college kids strip for them? Also Linda ends up making out with one and almost sleeps with him, that just struck me as odd, but sure you know whatever. Anyway, Charlotte gets all in Chloe’s head and fills her with doubt, and Linda and Maze and Ella all almost fight and Chloe drives off alone and has a talk with her conscience, aka, the bus driver. For an episode about all of Chloe’s life and decisions, she still seems like she’s being dragged along by all the other characters on the show until she leaves them all to head home for the night. Between the ludicrous nature of the Lucifer/Dan dynamic and the oddities of Maze’s bachelorette party from hell, this episode was odd switching back and forth, but had some good ending pay offs.

4. Dan and Charlotte forever

So Lucifer tells Dan he’s totally afraid all the time, and won’t tell Charlotte what he wants for fear of being told it’s not what he wants. Really it’s a lesson in parallels cause it’s the same reason Lucifer won’t tell Chloe he’s in love with her. For Dan though, it works. He goes to Charlotte’s end of the episode after she’s home from the party and tells her he wants to be dating and they should be together and she says okay and it’s really cute and sweet and thank God someone on this show can be happy.

This season has had breadcrumbs in a bunch of episodes about the two of them and their weird relationship after last season when Dan was sleeping with her when she was a goddess (the was a weird ass sentence to type). But they’re good for each other as Charlotte recovers and Dan moves on with his life. I like it, and am happy for them and wish them the best.

5. Even the engagements in LA don’t last

Biggest moment of the week, the wedding is off folks.

That was quick. Why would we go on this detour of Pierce being a pseudo-good guy, only to have him come back and probably be the villain here at the end after Chloe calls the relationship off? Even more so, he gets that scene with Amenadiel about all the things he has to look forward to now that he’s dead, which is supposed to instill doubt in him, but seems kind of meaningless if he’s not invulnerable anymore.

Anyway it doesn’t matter, Chloe goes back to not being impulsive, and Lucifer actually, seemingly, learns how annoying and how much of a liability he is. It seems like their dynamic will be less idiotic and more like it has been previously from here on out, just in time for the last two episodes of the season, where assuredly, Cain is going to get his revenge. Also will we ever found out about Lucifer’s wings and devil face or are we supposed to have forgotten that?

That’s all for this week folks, two more to go before we depart. Sound of in the comments and come back next week as we find out how awkward it probably is to work with someone you used to be engaged to.
