Five Thoughts on Lucifer‘s “Let Pinhead Sing!”

We have our second to third act transition episode as the season starts to enter the home stretch. A little bit of a slower and more ridiculous episode this week with Lucifer back on his bullshit, but nonetheless an important one seeing how it ends. Let’s dive in.

1. Flare to the face

So the episode starts off with one of the more ridiculous shows this show has had (and remember they killed someone in a vat of yogurt) with seemingly the pop star Axara taking a firework to the chest (not the face I just wanted the alliteration). Again, more celebrities in this show’s version of LA have been involved in some sort of criminal activity than actual Hollywood. If this show was fact, the entire city would be a crime-ridden cesspool.

Anyway, Lucifer and Chloe show up start doing some digging, one of Axara’s fans shows up murdered, and someone seriously botches that fake suicide, then completely makes that inconsequential by having her get shot at again, and so on. I just am continually surprised by how dumb the criminals in this show are. I can usually call the culprit within five minutes. Granted this is television, but I feel like most crime shows at least give you something to work with. It’s a fun setup though because it lets Lucifer play off Axara, and test out his theme of the week as he “tries to take the spotlight off Chloe.” I don’t think making her feel like crap is going to stop her from being a cop or putting herself in danger. But I digress.

2. Apology axe

This might have been the most absurd thing. Linda tries to apologize to Maze for sleeping with Amenadiel and brings her a forking axe. And has it gift wrapped! Where do you get a real axe in LA? Maybe it was on sale at Toys R’ Us since they’re going out of business or something I don’t know. Anyway, Linda tries to build the bridge with Maze this episode and Charlotte offers to mediate and it goes as south as you can possibly imagine. I think the way Maze framed her problem with Linda this episode makes this conflict more believable than her just having sex with Amenadiel. Maze is mad because Linda is supposed to the ideal, the moral high ground. Linda was the good person Maze looked up to as she tried to be good and reform from being a demon, but now she sees she’s just like everyone else. Everyone this season feels like they need to atone for something and it’s just been interesting to watch. I like that Amenadiel and Linda are done, it sucks that her and Maze are still fighting, but at least it’s beyond being just caddy now.

3. All that nihilism

I expected Pierce to respond with anger to Lucifer for not being able to kill him and for Abel dying (unnecessarily) last episode, but instead he turned straight to drinking. That probably makes more sense if he’s been alive since the beginning of time this is probably more disappointment and frustration than outright rage. Alcohol and nihilism go great together.

It’s humorous to see Pierce played off Dan as they go to Lux to try to feel better. Dan still has had nothing to do this season, so I guess if he’s just going to be comic relief at this point we might as well lean into that. His reaction to Pierce’s the world is dark and horrible and sucks was pretty great and I loved the beards=depression thing. “Don’t go full Hagrid, Kenny Rogers at best.” When he passes Pierce off to Amenadiel, we get some good back and forth. I wish this show would explore more the philosophical and theological instead of just throwing around blanket “God has a plan for you” statements. Pierce’s argument that Amenadiel hasn’t won God’s favor back yet is sound, and his critique of his unnecessary optimism is good. Again, Amenadiel is another one the show hasn’t figured out recently. He needs his wings back in order to be good again and be a good character again, and I think by season’s end we’ll get there.

4. Musical numbers!

I think I’ve said this before, but I love when this show does musical numbers. Watching Lucifer and Axara sing “I Will Survive” is a real treat just because I love Tom Ellis’ voice. I love when he plays the piano, I love when he sings, I love it all. It also proved that Axara could sing which I questioned a little bit in the middle of the episode and thought she staged this whole thing to sell more tickets or something. It was that or the assistant. I should’ve known it’s always the assistant.

5. “I think I’ve made a horrible mistake”

Yeah you took the knife out of your shoulder you should have died.

So Lucifer takes a knife of Chloe from the assistant, should’ve died, but doesn’t and then Chloe and the precinct get a couple tickets to Axara’s show that night. Pierce has it in mind now that he needs Chloe to like him to be the key for him to be hurt also since Lucifer can be hurt around her, so he makes sure she invites him to the show instead of Lucifer. When Lucifer ends up crying to Linda at the end it’s pretty powerful. I’m hoping this leads him to be honest with her finally and tell her about his feelings and being the devil and yada yada, because there’s no moving forward for either character unless that happens. At any rate, this sets Pierce and Lucifer at odds as we go into act three and await the final showdown.

That’s all for this week folks! Sound off in the comments below and come back next week as Pierce and Chloe kick it up a notch.
