Five Thoughts on Lucifer‘s “Orange is the New Maze”

All the fun Maze business finally comes to the forefront this episode as she takes center stage and we set the course for the final 5 episodes of the season. Let’s dive in.

1. Oh, Maze killed a man

We begin the episode with Maze back at her, Chloe and Trixie’s apartment looking for a knife she apparently left when she moves out. Lucifer shows up because she’s called him and she needs him to take her back to hell because she has had enough of Earth, and Lucifer’s rationale is all about how if he goes to hell, Chloe could be hurt while he’s gone. Not a great rationale. Anyway as the episode goes on Maze finds her knife…stuck in the chest of someone else. We spend the rest of the episode following her around as she goes from definitely having killed this man, to being framed, to being the victim. I don’t think anyone is surprised by the possibility that she might have stuck a knife in someone though. It’s interesting though to see her pushed into this point the last few weeks, and then to go through what all these other characters think and say about her. You feel bad for her. You see that she’s done some good when they bring in some of her bounties towards the end and they talk highly of her, even though she’s arrested all these people. Anyway, this case of the week is a good framing device, with a not so happy conclusion. Keep reading.

2. Lucifer this is not about you

So of course Lucifer makes this thing about him as well, which, again, is horrible, as Maze possibly killing someone should really have nothing to do with him. Or I guess that’s not true, it just comes across as petty and stupid again, because Chloe doesn’t know that Lucifer is the devil and so him saying “Oh this is all a vendetta against me because I wouldn’t take Maze home,” really doesn’t make much sense at all.

That being said Lucifer starts to fall apart this episode on the Chloe and Pierce front as he continues to see them together. Which by the way, I feel like they’re committing several workplace violations by being so handsy in public, but that’s beside the point. When Lucifer is being selfless he’s a great character, but when it comes to Chloe and his overprotectiveness, he continues to be a little ridiculous. And every other character on the show knows it. The scene where Dan is telling Pierce that Chloe and Lucifer are a package deal and go together, that it’s like dating a new girl who has a cat, you just have to love the cat, actually kind of gets to the point. Of course Pierce’s point, “Well I need to get rid of the cat,” is sort of ominous and exactly what you’d expect. Really what I’m trying to say, and so week after week, is that Chloe needs to know that Lucifer is the devil. It would just make things so much easier and much less cliché. That’s all I want.

3. I need to go back

I really wanted to talk about the last few minutes of the episode and I guess that’s really what these last three points are because a lot of things happen and they’re all good developments. I liked most of the episode, it was a pretty typical case of the week and rich people in LA committing crimes, but I really liked the last few minutes.

So Maze after all that comes to Lucifer’s penthouse, he pseudo-apologizes, and she again begs him to take her back to hell so that she doesn’t have to deal with all of humanity’s crap anymore because it’s hard to feel things and care about people. True dat. Anyway, his answer again is, “But I need you,” and “I need to protect Chloe,” and Maze flies off the handle again, because all season no one has chosen her or needed her and she continuously feels like the consolation prize. That sentiment I can get behind and is way better than her being petty and jealous about Linda and Amenadiel, which I now see as part of this larger arc of her getting to this point. It was rough there for a bit, but finally Maze has hit rock bottom, and her role going forward makes sense again.

4. “I’m not crazy”

Now time for subplot of the week! So Charlotte knows now that there are angels and demons, gods and goddesses, and that she actually was in hell. Hell yes!

I am so happy about this development, it’s all I wanted and I really wasn’t sure the show was going to get here after last week, I thought they might try to explain it away and make this a useless subplot but they didn’t. Charlotte thinks she might be crazy after both Amenadiel and Lucifer explain to her what happen, and then Lucifer reveals his wings in all their cosmic glory, and she realizes she isn’t crazy and things start to make sense. If handled right, bringing Charlotte into the inner circle of people could be really helpful, unless they go the loony bin route which I hope they don’t. I can’t wait to see where we go from here.

5. The Pierce/Maze Alliance of 2018

Finally the last reveal. I was wrong, it’s going to be Maze and Pierce versus the rest of the gang as Maze wants hell and Pierce wants death and they need each other. Pierce continues to show his true manipulative colors and go full evil, and I am really all here for it. The good thing about these last few episodes as these two start to team up, is that I want them to win. I think they both deserve to get what they want. Although Chloe getting in the way is going to be rough. Still it looks like she’s about to know soon too, according to the preview for the next episode.

That’s our show folks, I will see you in 3 weeks as we begin our march to the finish line. Sound off in the comments below, and we’ll see you then!
