By the power of… Skele-god!? Hi folks! Welcome back to our weekly recap of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, we’ve been on a hiatus since we finished Part One, but today is the day Part Two comes out and it’s time to celebrate with it’s first episode, named “Cleaved in Twain”, it serves as a reintroduction to the conflict, so let’s remember, Skeletor was hidden in Evil-Lyn’s staff, and now that the connection to the Magic is restored, he reappeared, stabbed Adam and turned himself into Skele-God, he has the Power now! Let’s dive in.

1. Teela inherited magic

Just like it was teased on part 1, this episode confirms that Teela indeed can use magic, it begins with a flashback of her as a newborn, with a young Duncan and Sorceress. The Sorceress is getting ready to go, and she says a heartfelt goodbye to her daughter, she enters to an underwater lake and is infused with magic, and Teela’s face paint is also illuminated.

Then we are back at the present, with Prince Adam mortally wounded and “Skelegod” has the power, and the Sorceress is trapped, but she manages to use her little remaining power to free herself and, after a brief struggle, transports Teela, Cringer, Adam, and Andra out of the Grayskull castle.

Furious at what she did, Skeletor murders the Sorceress, and only Man-at-Arms is able to say goodbye to her; but just as she is about to die, the Sorceress aides Teela who is trying to heal Adam’s wounds. I think this was an act that symbolizes the succession as Sorceress of Eternia, if not officially at least as a maternal act, so Teela has more power now than she previously had and we will surely see more of her using her magic in future episodes.

2. Power tastes like Copper

Now that Skeletor is imbued with the power of He-Man, he has everything he ever wanted, he has the power to destroy worlds and to use it in unimagined ways, but he is still the same incomplete Skeletor, the first thing he does now that he is a God is to mock the Sorceress for using her magic to the common good, instead of using it for herself; he also attacks Prince Adam for worrying about protecting people, and not leading them … or rather, dominating them.

After murdering the Sorceress, he appoints Evil-lyn as her substitute, and with her Power, he helps strengthen her magic, but that means that she will be trapped in the Greyskull castle, and there is no way to get rid of it. He still needs her, so not only is she trapped in a physical space but she is also trapped in an emotional place, because of her toxic relationship with Skeletor.

3. Clamp Champ & Fisto

While fleeing, the team of heroes appeared at the Royal Palace of Eternos, and they almost are attacked by Fisto and Clamp Champ, who previously appeared on the first episode as non-speaking roles. They explain that the King and Queen fled and they are here to protect the palace.

Although I was happy to see the first black character of the Masters of the Universe toyline, they lasted a little time, because Skeletor turned them into zombies and our heroes had to kill their partners, but let´s just take a moment to appreciate one of Fisto’s lines:

“I’d sure like to fist him [Skeletor]”

This, my friends, is art.

4. Everything is falling apart

This is the worst moment for our heroes, I mean, there’s a reason why the first part of this show ended in such a cliffhanger, am I right?

Man-at-Arms is prisoner of Skeletor and mourning the death of the love of his life, Adam is mortally wounded at first, and even thought Teela manages to cure him, he still lost the Sword of Power. The Sorceress is dead and Evil-Lyn is the new sorceress, Designed by Skeletor himself; and worst of all, the villain is slowly destroying Eternia, making everybody a zombie, and now, Clamp Champ and Fisto are death.

These are the last moments of our heroes, unless something happens, thankfully, Adam is still the best, most heroic warrior in Eternia, and he might have a plan to save the day…

5. Mythology is expanding

Just when Skeletor is about to kill everybody, Adam laughs and say that the spark to call the power is within him, and that the sword was only a conduit, and wonders what would happen if he calls the power without it, at the end, we briefly see a new version of the hero: Savage He-Man! (Which, really, was spoiled earlier this year with Mattel’s toy announcement).

This is a great opportunity to write about the differences between the original show and this one; here the mythology is expanding, heroes once relegated to a cameo or a brief appearance, are now meaningful to the show, and our main cast is explored in new ways, like this Savage He-Man, and a Teela that has a connection to magic. And, obviously, we have Skele-God.

It was a little bit weird to me that Skeletor is using the Power as magic, turning people into zombies, and giving/sharing part of the Power to Evil-Lyn, because those are things that Adam couldn’t do as He-Man, he couldn’t control magic, or at least not that I can remember. But it is a very interesting approach, the idea that Power does not develop in everyone in the same way, and each person will have a different strength or ability.

So, we will have to wait a week to talk about what happens with this new version of He-Man. But I loved this idea. And that’s it for this episode, this was a somewhat slow-paced episode, to reintroduce the conflict and prepare us for what is coming.
