Lucharaaaaaaan! Welcome to our review of ¡Mucha Lucha!‘s ninth episode, including “Will the Real El Rey Please Stand Up?” & “The Musica Man”. As every week there’s a song for you, this time is the classic mariachi song El son de la negra from the legandary Mariachi Vargas de Tecatitlán. And now that the ring is ready, let’s start this review!

1. Recaps

In “Will the Real El Rey Please Stand Up?” (which by the way is a great title) Rikochet is enjoying a golden era movie of the real-life El Rey, and his action figure gets jealous, then los Mascaritas go to an exhibition match, what will the plastic El Rey do?

Then we have “The Musica Man” where Rikochet defeats La Piñata on a match, and she gives him his own mariachi band! And they will follow him everywhere, literally, non-stop singing, Rikochet is going to have a hard time!

2. “An action figure doesn’t deserve this”

What is bigger in your life? Your idol or your favorite toy? This episode talks about what is more real and meaningful, because you might get to know your idol once, but your toy stays with you are your childhood.

I mean, in real life the answer is clearly your idol, that’s why Disneyland exist, it’s a way better experience to meet Mickey Mouse than having just a toy. But this episode makes a strong case for your toys, you have them with you every day, and when you grow up, and Disney is thousands of miles apart, everybody misses their toys. Dang it! Wait here, I’m going to search my Hulk.

3. The golden era of masked movies

This episode is a wonderful tribute to the greatest masked wrestlers on the world: Blue Demon and El Santo, both were incredibly famous, not only in Mexico, but also in Latin America, Europe and some parts of Asia, they made a lot of movies, the plot and the budget might put them on the B-movies list, but they were immensely popular, who can forget about “El Santo vs the Vampire Women” or “Santo vs the Evil Brain”, or “Santo vs the Guanajuato Mummies”, or the cult movie, although totally apocryphal “3 Dev Adam” featuring Captain America and Spider-Man as the bad guy! How weird is that? I’m very pleased with this tribute, the creators made a thorough research.

4. Your own mariachi band

We have another episode full of music, and I am very happy because it was a great episode, very hilarious. I am actually impressed for all the songs they wrote, I tried to make a little research about the episode but I found nothing, I guess they had to bring a Mariachi Band to the studio. Maybe they found a good band on the Mariachi Plaza of Los Angeles

5. Sometimes it does get awkward

It is kind of true. I remember that, one time, on a Quinceañera from a cousin, his father brought a band and she had to awkwardly stand all by herself in front of the band for half an hour trying to enjoy the music without feeling embarrassed, but there’s a solution to that! You can always bring a comedy-mariachi band, those guys are usually hilarious.

¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tres! ¡Ganadoooooor! That’s our review for this week. Let us know what you think of this episode of ¡Mucha Lucha! (and any other series from our Summer TV Binge) in the comments below. See you next Friday!
