The final episode of season three is upon us dear readers. Time for all the characters to get together for a last hurrah. Will they be able to save London from Lullaby? Spoilers ahead folks.
1. Lucius is the real hero this season
Throughout the season Alfred usually does the right thing, but he typically asks to be paid for it. He’s rarely selfless, looking out for number one; until it’s time for the writers to show he’s learned a lesson. Lucius on the other hand has always been trying to do the right thing. Last week Lucius went to rescue the Persons With Enhancements (PWEs) that General Thursday has captive. After getting captured himself—he’s no Batman—Lucius builds a radio MacGyver style and calls Martha. The Wayne family is still recovering from Virginia’s attack on the family, but Martha is ready to jump right back into the fire. A quick fight with Thomas resolves their central conflict of her being a secret agent. Martha and Alfred are on their way to Level 7.
Lucius insists that they release every captive and locks Thursday and his soldiers in their own prison. Thursday is assuming they are all working at the behest of Aziz; outside of the Prime Minister’s jurisdiction. This leads to their confrontation later in the episode.
Now that the PWEs are free, we can get the whole cast together to wrap up the other plot thread of the season: Lullaby.
2. Sandra stands up for herself with Alfred but marries him by the end anyway
The episode starts in media res with Alfred and Sandra chased by a crowd. Frances was successful in dosing half of London’s morning tea with the drug causing people to run rampant throughout the streets.
Alfred and Martha separate after freeing Lucius, Bet, and the PWEs. Martha needs to protect her family from the lullaby mob and Alfred needs to do the same for Sandra. When Alfred arrives Sandra isn’t having any of his nonsense. He’s been terrible to her for three full seasons. She asks Alfred who the last person he slept with was; she knows it wasn’t her. Alfred comes clean about Zahra which, for some reason, is all she needs to trust him again. They escape through the streets to Alfred’s bar, catching us up to the beginning of the episode.
When the crew assembles at Alfred’s bar to wait out the hordes attacking, Alfred interrupts PWE karaoke to ask Sandra to marry him again, today. She accepts much to the dismay of me. The titular highland wedding.
3. Lullabye victims are treated like zombies
While barricaded in the bar they start shooting at the infected people who are attacking. We get several gruesome headshots before any of the characters realize these are normal people who will be fine after a day or two. It’s straight up murder to be killing these people.
There is also no payoff to the Guy Fawkes masks. We see a small crowd wearing them killing off Frances when he thinks they are his disciples and that’s it. Plus only 10 Downing Street gets blown up not even Parliament.
4. Bet gets sidelined for the whole season
Bet has been sidelined for the whole season. She disappeared for episodes at a time on her own side quest, we get a fake out on her death that doesn’t even follow the “don’t see the body” rule, and she isn’t given much to do once she’s got super strength here. She’s one of many super powered people.
Bet was a standout for me in seasons one and two. Every time she was on screen her character did something surprising and Paloma Faith plays her brilliantly. It’s a disappointment for her to get so little screen time this year.
5. Where to from here?
This season ends with Thursday dropping a bomb on Downing Street. Aziz in his lullaby-affected state thinks he’s the king of England and acts that way when Thursday calls him about Martha and Alfred’s assault on Level 7. Thursday is led to believe Aziz is planning a coup and decides the only way to stop it is with force.
The main cast have all left the city in a stolen bus to wait out the drug’s affect on the city. Once they are clear, the bus stops to let Alfred marry Sandra. We see the mushroom cloud from Thursday’s bombing of Aziz in the background.
The show has once again deviated far off canon and put themselves into an interesting predicament. How do they resolve Martha and Thomas having a daughter? It was punted this season. How does a married Alfred with a child play into him raising Bruce after the Waynes are murdered? I wouldn’t be surprised if Bruce was Alfred’s son in this show. How badly is London destroyed this time? We ended last season with it in bad shape after a Civil War and the show jumped ahead five years to not have to show us any of the aftermath of that. Only time will tell what the show has in store for us next season on the Origin of Batman’s Butler!
