Well, Powerless is officially dead, It was pulled out of NBC’s schedule weeks ago, but it was just officially announced days ago, and we are bidding it farewell with our traditional five thoughts:
1. Dang! I Was Right
As you remember, five weeks ago we were talking about the possibility of the cancellation of the series and now it’s official. It’s sad to see it gone this way; three episodes didn’t even get to air. Ratings were lower and lower from the beginning, it was condemned since episode one. It just didn’t connect with the right audience and now we are where we are: saying goodbye to a good series (at least I liked it).
2. Why It Failed
From the development stage, Powerless was planned as a workplace comedy in an insurance company, then, thanks to test groups they changed the place to a security solutions company. I think this little change made a really big impact. I feel that the team had to make fast, unfit changes to the characters already developed. For example, I don’t know if I’m right, but I’m thinking about the three amigos. They have a great chemistry, but weird tasks in the company, and it doesn’t feel quite right. There was always something off, kinda incomplete. Like they’d been retrofitted into the new setting without being able to adapt the characters.
3. What was the best thing of the series?
Danny Pudi, Alan Tudyk, Ron Funches and Jennie Pierson. They delivered the laughs, and I hope they keep being awesome on any other thing they do.
4. Will It Have A Legacy?
Powerless has proven that comedies can be done, but they need to find their audience fast. There is supposedly a pilot in development for Marvel’s Damage Control at ABC. However, it seems to be in development hell, there’s no updates since 2015, and thanks to the failure of Powerless, they might be a bit more wary about this kind of series about superheroes without superheroes, especially as a comedy. Can you call it a ‘bad legacy’?
5. What’s next?
For the actors, I hope they find success on their next projects. For the three remaining episodes, I hope we are able to enjoy them soom. For the series, it would be cool to have it on Netflix, I’m sure it can find its niche market there.
