Five Thoughts on Powerless‘s “Emergency Punch Up”

In this episode, the whole team is left alone in the building after a gas attack messes with the city, while everybody else is enjoying the company retreat.

Here’s our thoughts:

1. Oh god, they are going to cancel it, aren’t they?

The episodes have been changing running order from the beginning, and almost every week you see changes in the schedule (you can check on The Futon Critic – there are more strikethroughed listings than actually aired episodes). And if I remember correctly, that’s what happened to Firefly. I mean, it’s usual to see scheduling changes but not that much nor that usually.

It even seems that NBC themselves don’t know what they are doing: they uploaded another episode on their website! Then, adding the fact that they changed the premise of the show from an insurance company to a security solutions one, feels like they don’t have much confidence on the show. I don’t know, it makes me nervous.

2. Was it a Bottle episode?

Well, it wasn’t a bottle episode in the full extent of the definition, but I enjoyed that they were alone the whole episode, in (almost) one set. Having a lot of places to go is easy, but being restricted in some sort of way is a good creative challenge, this is where you can get creative and develop your characters a little more.

3. The Netflix references

It was interesting to see Netflix references, the Making a Supervillain series about Dr. Psycho and the Stranger Things musical nod when Emily goes into the fog, kind of like The Upside Down scenes. It’s worth mentioning because Netflix was not directly referenced, instead, I feel like it shows how the society sees Netflix, not as a phenomenon, but as a the next step in TV watching, and the creators know it, it´s not a competition against internet but a convergence of ideas; they have the future in mind, when new people see Powerless for the first time in Netflix this jokes are going to be well received by that potential new audience.

4. The full cast on screen

It’s nice to see the seven main characters having scenes together; It’s not usual to see scenes like that in any series, but often times they are the best ones, you are able to see the good chemistry the actors have, here you can notice if a show is good or not, even the good vibes on the set are reflected on their acting, I’m glad they did this scene.

5. “The jokes guy’s dead?”

We have been talking about Van Wayne all series long, is he a good character? A bad one? Over the top? Funny enough? This time, he hired a team of writers that give him jokes and zings to tease his workers and it was hilarious, he also got to do a boss-speech and I couldn’t stop laughing. When he is not carrying the whole show, he definitely shines.

And that´s it. What do you thing of the show? Please let us know on the comments or hit us up on Twitter, we want to know what do you think of Powerless and all the series we review and enjoy. See you next week!
