Five Thoughts on Powerless‘s “Van v Emily” & “Green Furious”

This time we have two episodes to review: “Van v Emily: Dawn of Justice” & “Green Furious”; here’s why:

1. Oh! Now I get it

Last week I was worried that the series was going to get cancelled due to its messy scheduling, turns out it was not so messy after all: The episode called ‘Emergency Punch-Up’ was supposed to go out on April 6th, but due to the Syrian chemical attack, NBC decided to pre-empt “Van v Emily,” but some affiliates on the US and Canada didn’t get the memo on time and therefore, they aired the original episode, that meant two episodes in one week. So, my fears of the series being cancelled dissipated a little and we have a double review.

2. Van v Emily: Dawn of Justice’

In this episode Emily fights Van in a Green Arrow-themed archery contest for an office and Teddy falls for Green Fury. Teddy’s plot was ok, not the funniest moment but also not the worst, the good thing of it was that we got a chance to see more superhero action, with Green Fury and Olympian making appearances.

On the other side, the main plot (and the title) of this episode was the fight between Van and Emily because she wants an office. And that leads us to the next point.

3. Wow, that was harsh!

Here we saw a good chunk of character development, it turns out Emily is not so good as we thought, she’s also a little selfish, she can’t stand losing against Van and goes and called him out on his crap: being a bad boss, a bad loser and being enabled by everybody around him. Storywise, it doesn’t have a good conclusion: “You are not so bad” and he gets happy again and the episode finishes, just like that. But we are able to see how the characters are evolving and that’s good, am I right?

4. ‘Green Furious’ versus sexism

In this week´s episode Emily wants to be recognized on her first board meeting (and on the whole company), she befriends Green Fury which is struggling with being recognized as a real superhero instead of a gossip-magazines-heroine after breaking up with the Olympian, and there’s a plot about Wendy becoming friend of Jackie’s grounded daughter.

This episode talks a lot about sexism, whether it is Emily struggling to have a voice on Wayne Security, Green Fury’s attempts to show everybody she’s a serious heroine, Jackie trying to be a single mother, or Teddy going against every possible woman because of his efforts to hit on Green Fury. Here, you can see women striving and going forward despite men getting on their way. It was interesting and funny, and nice to see the show feature its female characters’ struggles as well as their triumphs.

5. Finally! Some power on “Powerless”

This episode had a plot driven by superheroes; Green Fury is a part of the story, not an addition in an office sitcom. It also had a bunch of superhero jokes and references (I do like Justice League Europe), which is great! These kinds of episodes are the ones that this series was created for; it was a very funny episode with a lot of power in it. If they keep doing episodes like this, people will be coming back every week.

And that´s it. What do you thing of the show? Please let us know on the comments or hit us up on Twitter, we want to know what do you think of Powerless and all the series we review and enjoy. Next week the already reviewed ‘Emergency Punch-Up’ is the one in the schedule, if nothing changes we will see you in two weeks!
